PC Upgrading

SiggFri

So i'm working on upgrading from a prebuilt computer and I'm not sure which mobo and ram to get.
Current PC specs:
CPU: AMD FX-835
Mobo: Asus M5A97 R2.0
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1070 FE (recently added)
Ram: 2x4gb ddr3
PSU: 650w

Planned components in build
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700X
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1070 FE
Ram: 2x8gb or 4x4gb DDR4

I'm not sure on which motherboard brand or model I should go for. I'm not looking for ram or a mobo with rbg or anything like that.
Any part recommendations are appreciated.

Asus Strix motherboards are generally really good performers. EVGA is also great, I just got one of theirs recently. Gigabyte uses the "ultra durable" monacre, and I think it rings true.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

welcome to the Linus Tech Tips forums!

your motherboard needs will have to have some questions answered:

  1. overclocking - yes/no
  2. what cooling?
  3. what purpose is the build for?
  4. what connectivity is needed?
  5. budget?

Overclocking yes

I'm using fan cooling

Purpose is to game and stream

I'm not sure on what connections I need

Budget for the motherboard should be less than 250. Ram should be less than 200.

small comment, you are using an ssd, correct?

If not please do buy like a Samsung 850 EVO 250GB or 500GB for Windows and games and throw all your personal stuff onto your hard drive. performance improves soooo much when you get an SSD.

My profile picure is real. That's what I look like in real life. I'm actually a blue and white African Wild Dog.

Ryzen 9 5900X - MSI Ventus 2x OC 3060 Ti - 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200MHz CL16 - ASRock B550 Phantom Gaming ITX/ax

EVGA CLC 280 + 2x140mm NF-A14 - Samsung 850 EVO 500GB + WD Black SN750 1TB - Windows 11/10 - EVGA Supernova G3 1000W

strix X470-F or Gigabyte X470 Aorus gaming are some strong reccomendations from me.

If you're using Ryzen you'll want fast memory which is essential for Infinity Fabric to aid the CPU in running as fast as possible. Samsung's B-Die RAM seems to be working the best with Ryzen and is the likeliest to run at 3200mhz+. Hynix M-die RAM is a slightly cheaper option and if you loosen the timings may get it running at 3200mhz+.
