I have some random stuff I have swapped out of systems.  At this point, I have no use for it.  Not enough to make a full system, so if I decide to fold, I'll need to invest a little.  I would like some indications/impressions of what kind of performance I could expect.

I would value an opinion beyond "every little bit helps".  I am willing to pay for the power and the extra components, if it truly adds "value".  For folding, I don't yet have a good internal definition of "value", so please help me out.

The plan would be to fire it up and let it run.  And run.  And run.

Here is what I have, followed by what I am expecting to purchase:

  • AMD A10-5800K
  • Silverstone HE-01 (I so wanted to use the cooler, but it never made it into a case)
  • Random HDD
  • 8gb of 1866 DDR3
  • HD7770
  • HD7850 2gb (willing to use if I could ever get my hands on an R9 270 to replace the 7850)
  • Butt load of fans

Plan to purchase in support of a folding rig:

  • Another HD7770 (some open box ones at Newegg for reasonable $)
  • FM2 ATX board with 3 PCIE slots
  • 600W power supply with 4x 6+2 power leads
  • Case with 8 spaces (to fit 3 GPUs on the MB)

A couple followup questions:

  1. Can I use the graphics circuitry in the APU as another GPU, giving me 4 GPUs?
  2. When folding, would the A10 hold these 4 cards back?  Or does folding put a minimal load on the CPU?

Thanks for the help.

Chad
