Relid safe method

Go to solution Solved by SidM,

Around the die, apply some conformal coating to prevent seepage of LM. Make sure the silicone id applied generously, creating a seal around the CPU, to prevent leakage. I personally, delid and relid my cpu every 6 months to make sure nothing bad has happened.

Hi guys!!

I bought the delid tool and the custom copper IHS from RockItCool and I was wondering about something

I know how to delid safely and all the stuff like that, but on the relid part I wonder about protection. I want to LM the custom IHS on the inside (die to IHS) and the outside ((IHS to cooler (the plate of my cooler is copper no worry)), but while I am moving a lot my setup I cannot just not glue my IHS to my cpu because LM can possibly move and fuck my CPU for good.

So there's my question. What can I use to proctect my CPU from leaking of LM and what should I use to glue my CPU back with a safe method ?

Thx to anyone that will be able to answer me !!!!

I used liquid electrical tape to protect components under the lid, and black gasket maker to seal the lid back down on all three of my successful delids (All Haswell), no issues thus far on any of them.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

I used nail polish (I should buy the correct protective stuff though), and just draw lines on the CPU PCB for where the center of the iHS is. I just let the socket hold the IHS down, no issues at all. I'm not a fan of gluing the IHS back on, in case of a mistake.

personally i don't bother with LM between the IHS and Cooler.

you can use permatex black silicone to reglue the IHS to the CPU, make sure you don't use to much as this can create a gap between the IHS and DIE = higher temps.

small dots on the corners will be more than enough.

What you mean by liquid electrical tape ? Is there any electrical tape I should avoid and where to put it on the CPU ? thx :D

What is doing conformal coating ? and will it smell something when the CPU will reach higher in temperature ?

What kind of silicone I should avoid and what kind of silicon that could do the job ( except from your specific product )

Literally exactly what it sounds like liquid electrical tape is a liquid coating that dries in minutes. Easy to apply and very useful. And the reason I had to use it on mine is that there are electrical components exposed around the CPU die on Haswell. Other generations may not have those exposed components, I'm unsure as I haven't delidded a newer chip yet.

You can look at conformal coating like transparent nail polish, it forms a coating which protects the minute metallic circuits in ur processore from liquid metal, whuch could cause a short.
