sorry if this has been asked 20 times before but i searched and couldnt find anything.

Straight to the point, i was playing fortnite the other day and since i opened i was getting hard lag spikes but only for a few miliseconds but i was getting them quite frequently, so i decided to check task manager and i saw that my CPU and Disk were both at 100% usuage. Ive been playing games for a good while a lot more demanding then fortnite and ive never had this issue before. Originally i thought

i had something updating or running in the background but after a good search i found nothing. I then went to google today ( all this happened 2 days ago, still the same issue now) and tried a few things but none of which helped.

Anyone know what i can do to try fix this? ive done a full antivirus scan and checked my CPU temps and they both came back fine.

EDIT;

CPU goes back to normal when fortnite is closed and disk goes back to normal as long as nothing is open, any game or installer sets it off

An ssd will not only improve performance significantly. Additionally you won't experience nor suffer any more "100% Usage" on your disk in task manager. If you don't have the funds you simply don't want a ssd than check the sata port to see if there is any programs that cause mind boggling usage to the hard drive. Replace the sata port.

NB 1 thing I would do is go in task manager and see what programs are causing it the most.

My current code projects

--------------------------------

  • C#/OpenGL ( using OpenTK graphics library API ) KnightsRealm ( unfinished, WIP plan on releasing on steam maybe a mobile port idk ) 2d topdown pixel art based game with medieval themes, sorcery, dragons, open world
  • C++ crypter ( if your into cryptography, I plan on releasing this on my website later :P
  • C#/OpenGL ( OpenGL for UI ) fan/light controller for my room w/ raspberry pi and some mechanical motors and stuff :D

Current repair projects

------------------------------

  • My dreadful receiver ( a capacitor blew )
  • working on a PC from a client, CPU died within the system, seems like a short, replaced CPU and awaiting payment before I ship it back
  • my old 1tb sas drive for my NAS, some blemishes or something on the PCB need to clear that back out, if it doesn't work i'll need to scrap it ( already backed up all my stuff thankfully )

If you want any software made, or stuff to be repaired give me an email!

some games are CPU heavy some are GPU heavy.

i f your not currently using an SSD for your OS I would suggest trying to get one, the read/write rate is 4-5 times faster than the spindal HDD.

given that it mainly happens on games I would say that either

a) the CPU is underpowered or being overworked

b) not enough ram which is causing heavy page file(aka swap file) usage (hence the cpu overworking).

current main system: as of 1st Jan 2023

motherboard : Gigabyte B450M DS3H V2

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600

ram : 16Gig Corsair Vengeance 3600mhz

OS :multi-boot

Video Card : RX 550 4 GIG

Monitor: BENQ 21 inch

I have the money and I might actually order one today, how do I transfer my OS though?

Do you have any recommendations, I'd like something around 240gb?

Thanks for the help :)

depending what country you live in, the prices could be nice and cheap or darned expensive.

the cheapest i can find in my country is an adata 120 ssd about $59 or a 240 ssd goes for about $89. with read/write times of  520/450MB/s

but no sorry someone else would have to give you "a whats best at the moment" when it comes to SSD's

Im going to show my age here lol.....

The best program for moving ive ever seen was an old DOS program called Norton's Ghost (it came out on old 1.4 floppies pmsl)

but honestly I dont know what can do it cleanly these days.

this might help

https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/how-to-move-windows-10-to-an-ssd/

BUT I would Stress to try and also get more RAM (preferably the exact same as what you have or bigger capacity if the mobo will accept them).

Yeah no problem, I would go for a kingston 240gb but I use a western digital ssd. Really any sata ssd works..

I already have 16gb Ram and I barely use 10.

but other than that I have ordered a Kingston 240gb for €45 off of Amazon as it was the best rated for its price. Thanks for the help guys.
