If you don't need a lot of space then Patriot Burst Series 480GB or I guess for you even 240GB is the best value right now. If you have a bigger budget then keep in mind that you dont feel the jump to the absolute fastest NVME SSDs from regular ones.

Sandisk & Intel are good, but overall I prefer Samsung.

I'd recommend avoiding OCZ.  I don't know what the overall reliability is, but I've had two of them die in less than a year.  One was doa, and the other I got lucky and managed to catch before any dataloss occurred.

Western Digital recently bought Sandisk, so I think they're just rebranding Sandisk's ssd's.  Overall however I would probably avoid them for now.  I don't think they're necessarily bad, just unproven at this point.

Those are the main brands I have experience with.

Size wise, I'd probably go ahead and get a 500gb.

Minitool Partition Wizard is great for migrating data from an hdd to an ssd.

Also if I had to hazard a guess I'd say that the hard drive you have now is an oem model, and at 3 years old you should definitely consider replacing it as soon as you can.
