I bought an Asus X55A (I know how old it is and I should upgrade and yada yada doesn't matter) and CNET, which is normally right on this stuff, says it can support up to 8G but I've only got the one DIMM slot. Does it support an 8G stick or was I just misinformed? Never used a laptop that's supported a single 8G...

If you read the specs from the manufacturer's site first before you install, you'd save some time and energy.

DDR3 1333 MHz SDRAM, 1 x SO-DIMM socket for expansion up to 4 GB SDRAM

And a 32bit Windows can only support maximum 4GB of ram.

based off of intel's website that processor supports up to 32GB ram, adding the consideration it supports 2 memory channels, with the guess that they went with the usual "two sticks per channel" concept...

32/4 = 8..

taking a *very* wild guess that processor is meant to handle 8GB sticks.

The max supported ram is controled by the bios not the processor right? Like if the bios says 'I dunno what to do' then it just won't use it

it is a combination of both in a sense i guess. the memory controller in the CPU needs to be capable of handling an amount of memory at a certain speed, but if the bios specificly doesnt want to initialize it, you're out of luck too.

the latter is probably the achilles heel of the intel NUCs tbh..
