My budget is around £1000 + gpu. Location UK. General preferred buying sites. Overclockers/scan/Amazon etc.

Aim: generally I'm starting to lag in some mmos. I also play some other new releases and multiplayers with friends. I don't care about productivity etc. Being able to occasionally stream or capture video is useful but not important if adds a lot more cost.(I'll have spare rigs I can use for it if needed)

Current spec:

4u rack mounted server case.

16gb ddr3 ram

Haswell refresh i7 non k.

Asus board.

500gb 2.5inch(slowish) ssd boot drive

1tb ssd storage for games.

9tb 3.5inch mechanical storage.(3x3tb)

Kfa2 8pack gtx 980 4gb.

750 watt semi mod psu.

Acer 27inch 1440p ips monitor no gsync etc. Standard 60hz.

2nd crappy 24inch 1080p monitor for web browser and such.

I figured I was due an upgrade soon anyways so I should finally make the jump to ddr4 etc.

I'm happy to reuse some hardware. I will need to reuse some of the drives so at least 4-6 sata ports on mobo are needed. Although I'd like a nvme m.2 also.

Focus is mainly on wow and casual multiplayer shooters and other games with friends.

Budget is for the base pc. Graphics and monitor upgrades can be given separate.  I don't mind spending the money but I also don't want to waste money.

I could also do with a sound upgrade. My wireless corsair void headset is dying. I'd like recommendations on a decent headset or good headphones and a desk Mic.

Using a k95 keyboard and a scimatar mouse by chance not brand focused so any recommendations is fine.

Cheers in advance.

Are you reusing most of your hardware?

Ryzen 8 cores is going to be useful for capture/streaming vs a 6 core i7

If reusing hardware

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

Don't know about your PSU, if it's a good one, then reuse it.

HDD can be reused.
You can also use a cheaper M.2 since even a cheap M.2 is faster than ye olde M.2.
You can also reuse since they're still good.

That's a pretty beasty 980, would you like to keep it and put a heavy OC (if you can)? I also suppose you could tidy up your SSD to gain a bit of more speed from it? Anyway, just the base setup here, should cover your update itch and get rid of the CPU bottlenecks. You can add a GPU later if you want:

It is a great 980, however as i said my fps is dropping sub 30fps now in raids in wow etc. I mean i could just lower settings but that's aids.

Should mention i'll be keeping it in my rack mount case. As i have a server cab and no other space on or near desk. so not sure if aio coolers will fit without some super modification.

I'm also not sure if to wait for coffee lake refresh and 2000 series cards and purchase in october.

It's always the game of should i wait or bite the bullet.
