Hello not new too the tech world but i am new too getting everything wired up using Ethernet cords you know since " its ohh so much better than wifi" but today i have encounterd  a big problem. so a couple of weeks ago me and my roommates have invested into a network switch and some cables. 

So heres how it runs.....

Down stairs ( main modem + wifi router ) 

Upstairs ( network Switch ) 

100FT Ethernet cable( going from down stairs router too upstairs network switch )

50 FT ethernet cable ( going from network switch too my PC ) 

im the only one utilizing the current network switch . my s have not added there cables yet but we are all wondering 

why did my network speeds drop??

2.46 mbps ( ethernet ) 

 

i have added some pics too maybe help identify a problem? not the best pic but yea all i can doo for now.

( blue - router from downstairs to upstairs)

(I had to first check how much it is 100FT. :))

 

Well, 100FT is about 30 meters, so it's long cable. Everything depends then on cable quality. It must be Cat 5e minimum, but Cat 6 is more optimal. But not only category, but quality of cable matters. And even if quality is good, there is always chance that plugs are bad.

 

You may check this by connected second computer to your switch and copy file between computers using windows file sharing. It should be about 90 MB/s if you have gigabit switch. If is much worse, then problem is with cable from switch to your computer. If is good, then check cable from switch to your router.

 

I assume that you're using gigabit switch.

so next day came into play! everything just seems fine now........ i did nothing but turn off my PC for the night . woke up tested it this morning and wham!  120 download and 12 upload. idk why technology is like this .  still gonna try the pc trick you said gonna do a file transfer. see how fast the transfer rate it . i will keep you posted .

I still dont understand how a restart can doo this?
