Server Build Help

elj51

Hey all,

I'm trying to build a home Freenas server but I'm having some trouble getting my board to post. I was hoping someone could give some suggestions.

Here is a list of my components:

Motherboard: Intel S5520UR

CPU: (2X) Intel Xeon E5645

RAM: Micron MT36JSZF1G72PZ 4x 8gb = 32GB PC3-10600R DDR3 ECC Memory

PSU: EVGA 450 BR

So after installing everything and powering it on, the fans would start to spin but no post LEDs on the board. There was also a 1-5-5-4 beep code. After speaking with the seller of the board, they told me to get a 5500 cpu to get the board to post, then upgrade to latest bios and that should fix the issue. I was able to get a xeon E5504 and the board posted. I upgraded the bios to the latest version but still can't get the E5645 to post.

Next I removed CPU 2 to see what happened and I was able to get post LEDS, but still no post on the monitor. The post LED is OOOX OXOX, which according to the manual, is Update Needed.

So I'm kind of at a loss here. I tried the other E5645 (the one that was in the CPU2 slot) and I got the original problem of no post LEDs at all. I'm thinking this CPU may be DOA but I would like to get the other one to post before I go ahead and but another.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

When dealing with server boards and Xeon chip, full compatibility must be maintained.

Do you have the Spec number correct on the Xeons?

Yes, they are the SLWBZ. I have upgraded the motherboard to BIOS 69

Ok, sounds like one (or both) of your original Xeons are bad. It happens, rare, but happens.

Since you already have 1 working Xeon, grab another that matches and call it good to go?

The problem is that the one that "Works" still isn't posting. I am still getting a LED post code that says to update the board but I've already updated it to the latest bios.

You said it posted and you were able to update the BIOS. So now I"m confused that you say:

Sorry, I can see how that was unclear.

The board post when I have the E5504 installed. This is what the seller of the board recommended I do in order to update the BIOS to the latest version. After I updated the BIOS, I switched back to the E5645 and it still won't post and the post LEDs are saying that the BIOS needs to be updated.

I expect one of the E5645s to be bad, because I get a power fault when it is installed, but the other on gets post LEDs.

Right, but the E5504 works, so get another E5504 and be happy. The board clearly doesn't like the E5645...
