Hi, I recently built a new PC

Computer Type: Desktop

GPU: XFX Speedster MERC19 Radon RX 7800 XT

CPU: RYZEN 7 7800X3D

Motherboard: MSI PRO B650-S Wifi

BIOS Version: 7E26v1D

RAM: 32GB CORSAIR VENGEANCE DDR5 6000MHz CL30

PSU: Corsair RM750e (2023) 80+ GOLD

Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow

Operating System & Version: WINDOWS 11 Family 64bit

GPU Drivers: Driver Version 23.40.33.01-240508a1-403196C-AMD-Software-Adrenalin-Edition

Audio Device : Realtek ALC897 codec

Audio Drivers: Realtek HD Universal Driver 6.0.9629.1

Chipset Drivers: AMD Chipset Driver 6.05.28.016

I am having audio issues where the sound will randomly cut for ~1-2 seconds. It happens in videos, games and even on the desktop.

I tried troubleshooting through VLC because it's the only video player that doesn't pause the video when the sound cuts and the debug message says :

main warning: playback way too late (199583): flushing buffers
mmdevice debug: state changed: 0
wasapi debug: reset
main debug: inserting 53711 zeroes
mmdevice debug: state changed: 1
main warning: playback way too late (248978): flushing buffers
mmdevice debug: state changed: 0
wasapi debug: reset
main debug: inserting 53023 zeroes
mmdevice debug: state changed: 1
main warning: playback way too late (250977): flushing buffers
mmdevice debug: state changed: 0
wasapi debug: reset
main debug: inserting 53264 zeroes
mmdevice debug: state changed: 1

these messages repeat at regular intervals as long as the sound is not playing.

I have tried looking for a solution, but nothing so far. I've asked on various support forums/subreddits, and I even sent a support request on AMD's technical support platform.

I'm hoping that you guys might be able to help me. This issue is driving me crazy with anxiety at the idea that something might be faulty with my hardware since it was a lot of money.

I dont have any answers right away (but ill look around and see what i can find) but off the bat, id contact MSI instead of AMD as MSI is the motherboard manufacturer and will be the one who incorporated the sound chips into their motherboards, AMD wont have anything to do with this really

Also make sure there are no bent pins, broken pins/cables and that the audio cable is fully seated if using a case's front audio ports.

System specs:

CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D [-30 PBO all core]

GPU: Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX NITRO+

Motherboard: MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI

RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO RGB 32GB 6000MHz CL32 DDR5

Storage: 2TB SN850X, 1TB SN850 w/ heatsink, 500GB P5 Plus (OS Storage)

Case: 5000D AIRFLOW

Cooler: Thermalright Frost Commander 140

PSU: Corsair RM850e

Case Fans: Fractal Prisma (120 x6, 140 x3) + 2x40mm fans

Hi, I'm using an USB Arctis 5 headset connected to the back panel, so I don't think there are any bent pins.

I will try contacting MSI

You could also try updating drivers, im not sure how old or defunct theyd be if its a new build but worth a try

Have you tried reverting any overclock settings to stock/default values in BIOS?

I only have AXMP enabled, disabled it but the problem persists

I have installed the latest available drivers for both graphics and chipset. Realtek is the tricky one because whatever I install, windows just upgrades it to the latest one, and I grabbed the one from MSI's drivers page.

I had tried Linux Mint on this system before installing windows 11 (to see if I could get away from microsoft) but the problem was there, and way worse than now, and updated drivers weren't available.

Update:

This might be a USB issue. Since the arctis 5 comes with a swappable 3.5mm jack, I used that to connect it to the computer and have been playing a video on VLC for over an hour without getting any playback errors in the log. Gonna keep it running for another hour to see if anything changes.
Will also try USB-C earbuds and bluetooth earbuds.

It's weird because the mouse and keyboard are also connected via USB and I haven't experienced any issues with them.

Alright, the solution was very dumb : Just use a different USB port.

Turns out, the blue USB ports are connected to something called Hub-1074. I'm guessing since I also had mouse and keyboard connected there, something was getting messed up.

Connected the headset to a port that is connected to the CPU and now everything works without a hitch.

I feel so dumb. I guess it will either stay that way, or a new chipset driver will make the experience better.
