BSOD, CPU hitting 100c

What does the BIOS say the pump RPM speed is?

As a final update, I appreciate all the help! I figured maybe the pump had gone out so I tried a different cooling solution and the temp went down to about 40c idle. Last ditch effort I swapped the 7700k out for an old i5 6500 I had laying around and all the problems vanished. So I guess the pump went out, and I didn't notice in time to stop my 7700k from overheating.

Hey guys, excuse any formatting issues please as I'm on mobile. Was playing games last night and the computer started chugging along, which isn't usual, so I rebooted a few times but the problem was still there. Fast forward to today, can't even get it to boot into windows. Bios says the cpu is reaching 100 c, system recovery gives an error, windows said I was missing a system file, etc... It all went to shit.

System specs:

Windows 10 (fully updated)

I7-7700k (was over clocked to 4.9 but I removed that to no avail)

Z170A msi motherboard with the up to date bios

gtx 1080

8gb ddr4 2133 ram

For cooling I have a corsair h110i

I'm just wondering how this happened so suddenly. Could be cpu, the motherboard, or even bad ssd? I have no idea and appreciate any help whatsoever. Thanks.

Make sure your pump on the AIO is running (feel the tubes so you can feel whether there's water running through) and that it's making good contact with the CPU. Also verify all fans are running.

since it says its hitting 100°C id first check if this is actually the case by removing the cooler, checking the thermal paste and reapplying it so you can see if this solves the problem.

also check if the pump does something or not.

if you know the cooling is working and good you can start checking for the next problems.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. I moved the connector from cpu fan 1 to 2 and the pump/fans are running. In the bios still says the cpu is running around 70c. I think it could be my ssd, because it's trying to boot off other drives and when I make it boot from the ssd it can't detect it.

Your SSD wont affect your BIOS reading as you dont need a drive connected to get into the BIOS of the board. If the board is reading 70c in BIOS, then something is wrong. I would take your pump off and put new paste on and test again.

Agreed. I don't have paste with me, I'm going to go out and get some. If reseating it with new paste and it still reads that high, what's the next step? Would it be the cooler that's failing, or the cpu?

Turn the pump speed up. I find that in general running the pump speed at about 2500-3000rpm at idle gives the best performance and then ramping them up to about 3500 or so at top end.

Kind of new with aio coolers, sorry but can I can control the pump from the bios? I can't boot into windows because of the ssd issue(I'll see if I can just reinstall windows on it)

yes you can control it in the BIOS as long as the board is a 4 pin header for PWM, which that board should support and have.

After spending the whole day tinkering with it, reseating everything, fresh thermal paste applied. Cpu is still getting to like 75c on bios before I shut it down. I can feel the pump working, and the fans are spinning. I'm stumped.

I would notice if my pump would go out lol, my room would heat up ;p That's what happens when you have one of the worst cooled rooms in the house.
