Hello,

Recently my headset died (Razer Carcharias) and now I am searching for a new one.

The two of them I am selecting from now are Razer Kraken 7.1 and Razer Blackshark.

I have a few questions:

  • Which one do you think is bether (Razer Kraken 7.1 or Razer Blackshark)?
  • Do you need a special sound card for the Razer Kraken?
  • And do you have any other suggestions which headset to buy in this price range (up to 150€/200$)

Thank you for your answers.

Are you willing to go for Audiophile headphones and a desktop microphone? They will blow all of those out of the water. I would go for Beyerdynamic DT770's and a Blue Snowball/Blue Snowball ICE (whichever is cheaper).

(Sorry for the hate against headsets here, but I just hate poor audio. And I really like Razer it's just that they don't know anything about audio...).

1) Never ever in your life think about getting a headset. It's a low quality mic slapped on a low quality cans and marketed the hell out of. Get a set of headphones and a separate mic.

2) Razer don't know shit about audio (no hate against them as a company. I have several of their products and loving them :) Writing this on one of them ;) ), so I would strongly advice against buying anything from their audio department. Get something from the ones whom know what they are talking about.

3) 7.1 is utter bullshit and just marketing. Having several sources is irrelevant inside a can as they are so small anyway.

4) Wated my time writing this so can't find something for you now, but I'll find something later if you haven't found something by then :)

You'd be better served just buying good headphones and a desktop microphone unless you want a wireless gaming headset or virtual surround sound. Marquees Brownlee has a great video on headphones in your price range. Custom One Pros from Beyerdynamics, ATH-M50s from Audio Technica, or even Sony MDR-X05s - which I personally use - are good choices. Really, you can't go wrong with a pair of headphones from Sennheiser, Beyerdynamics, Sony, Audio Technica, or other companies with a good reputation in audio products within your price range. The suggestions I made, though, I can stand pretty confidently behind.
