Hello guys,

I apologise if I'm re-running an old themed story or dilemma here but after scrolling through various forums, reviews and such I have come to a dead end. I have no idea what is the right pick anymore.

I am building a computer for the second time (the previous was from old parts and for fun - I got it to work but that's not hard really). This PC will be mostly for gaming (looking to start at 1080p and eventually moving up to the realm of 1440) as well as for some work - nothing heavy just light data analytical tools such as SigmaPlot, R and maybe some labview programming.

Initially I opted for an i5-8400 but felt tempted to upgrade a bit. My current selection includes R5 2600/2600X, i5-8600k, R7 2700 and i7-8700. The latter is slightly unlikely as it is beginning to weigh heavily on my budget (800-1000 maximum).

Could you help a guy out please?

With respect to gaming I will be playing CS:GO, Overwatch, Battlefield V, DOTA2 and Dark Souls 3.

Many thanks.

R5 1600X is the best bang/buck. Iirc the 1600x has a better cooler than the 2600x but I might be wrong

R5 1600 is better than the 1600x in terms of value. Also the 2600 is so closely priced to the 1600 its very few reasons to run it

What budget and country?

Do you keed OS/peripherals to be included?

Do you also want a monitor?

I will cook up something for you in pcpartpicker

My budget was stated above - £800 to £1000

Country: UK

No, I'm focusing on the PC itself at the moment - OS I can get from a friend and the rest I can get via a different budget.

Oh, I'd enjoy seeing builds suggested by others, definitely. Much appreciated!

This is on the lower end of the budget. Ill cook up something on the higher end if you want to, but the only real difference between them will be swapping the GPU with a 1070

That looks great! I was thinking of opting for the R5 2600 especially when a lot of AMD build guides from part picker suggested R5 2600 but sites like Tom's hardware recommended the 2600X over the 2600, can anyway elaborate further as to why? I'm sorry to say I didn't really understand the reasoning.

I forgot to mention that I have already a Corsair RM650X from a friend who had a spare brand new one for some reason so can reduce the cost of that as well as a 2.5" FireCude 2TB SSHD that was originally for my PS4 Pro but have since decided to sell the PS4 Pro and put money towards the PC build - apologies for this blunder of mine.

Could I see a higher spec one please? What are the key parts you would substitute?

Thank you again for doing this for me!

Thanks for the input! I like this build also but as by my previous post why did you pick the 2600X over the 2600? Just out of curiosity.

I'm happy to finally receive clarification over the best CPU for my needs (R5 2600/X)

2600X has a higher base clock and a better cooler.

It's a slightly higher binned 2600 with a better cooler.

if you want, you can just get a 2600 and a nice cooler like a cryorig h7 or arctic esports one.

The changes. I hesitated on the 1800x, but it was on a very nice deal, so why not. You can swap the 1800x if you want with the 2600 or 2600x if you want to

The reason for not going to intel is the pricehike to the point whem swapping is considerable

Performance-wise the intel and ryzen are evenly matched all-round?

That looks amazing, I'll have a closer look through cpu.benchmark.com between the 1800X and the 2600X! I'm really liking the build! Thanks man

At the pricepoint at the 2600 yes. You will need to step up to an 8600k or 8700k and a Z series board before i think its worth it, but that is mot the kind of budget we are working with

This it. To fit within 1000£ you would drop the 1070ti to a 1070.

Not as bad pricing as i first thought.

Performance in this build has been increased in older titles, newer ones are similar to the other build. (Assuming the 2600 choice in the other build, note that the 1800x is 200£ leanwhile the 2600 is £150 i believe)

the 8600k is 20$ more, and you need to buy a better cooler and motherboard

so its basically for 2600X, 195+70$ mobo. vs 8600k = 220+30-50$ cooler+100$ mobo

if the 8600k was 20$ less, it might've been an option

What kind of budget would allow for that do you think? Could you suggest a moderate i5-8600k build please for comparison purposes please?

I forgot to mention that I have already a Corsair RM650X from a friend who had a spare brand new one for some reason so can reduce the cost of that as well as a 2.5" FireCude 2TB SSHD that was originally for my PS4 Pro but have since decided to sell the PS4 Pro and put money towards the PC build - apologies for this blunder of mine.

yeah, i know. it was on purpose

Amazing. I'm struggling now to choose between this build and the higher spec 2600X build that you also suggested to be honest. I feel like the fact that apparently AMD are sticking with the same socket until 2020 (I heard) may be favourable for possible future upgrading? Whilst intel has a habit of changing sockets every year case-in-point Kaby Lake and Coffee Lake? What do you think? If given the same two builds with the same budget and in my position which would you pick?

Ryzen build -  CPU: Ryzen 7 3700X Cooler: Corsair H115i Platinum RGB | GPU: RTX 2070 FE | RAM: 2x8GB Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB DDR4-3200MHz | PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA P2 750W | Motherboard: MSI X570 MEG Ace | Storage: Samsung 970 EVO 500 GB - Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200 RPM | Case: Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic

Intel build - CPU: i5-9600k @ 4.9 GHz - 1.28v Cooler: NZXT Kraken X62 rev 2 | GPU: GTX 980 Ti FE | RAM: 2x8GB Corsair Vengeace LPX DDR4-3200MHz | PSU: Corsair RM650x  | Motherboard: Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Ultra | Storage: Crucial MX500 500GB - Western Digital Blue 1TB 5400RPM | Case: NZXT H700 Black

Laptop - HP Pavillion; CPU: Core i5-7200U RAM: 8GB DDR4-2133MHz | GPU: Intel HD 620 | Storage: Samsung 128GB SSD - Western Digital 1TB HDD
