Hi LTT.

I've been practicing guitar for almost 2 year now (self taught)

And i've been thinking that i need a better string so i don't need to tune it too often.

So i search the internet in order to find the best string i can afford and i came across this elixir brands.

It seems a good strings but there are 4 option and i didn't know jack crap about the differences between them.

Here is the site.

https://www.elixirstrings.com/support/polyweb-nanoweb-optiweb-coatings

So could someone explain it to me?

I mean, tuning instability would be more likely a setup issue IMO. Things like a nut that wasn't cut properly, loose tuners, the guitar needing to be re-intonated, issues at the bridge etc.... Old strings can cause it too, but it'll happen to both expensive and cheap strings either way.

The deal with the Elixirs is they're coated, which is done to protect the strings from oxidation and other things that would help wear down your strings, making then theoretically last longer. Now that won't really do anything for tuning stability but your strings could last more than an average set (and retain their tone) for longer, which usually means less spent on strings. The different coatings they use on the strings will slightly effect the response and sound of the string, hence the gimmick.

The Nanowebs are their 'original' coated strings and they're relatively bright sounding and are supposed to feel more like a traditional uncoated string. It's probably the Elixirs most people use. The Polyweb coating in comparison is supposed to have a more worn in sound and feel so they're less bright than the Nanowebs and they are a bit more slinky in feel. The Optiweb is their newest offering and it kind of like a better Nanoweb in a sense. They feel less stiff than Nanowebs and are a little bit brighter if you're into that.

Personally I don't like coated strings that much. I mostly stick to nickel round-wounds for my 'classic' style electrics and then whatever I can find to put on the rest.

From personal experience the Elixirs I've used don't last long enough for me to justify the extra bucks. Also, I have a heavy picking hand so I would be more likely to break a string before the end of the month anyway and need a new set. I also don't like how the coating feels. I find them too slick and it's easy for my fingers to slip. Personally I just wipe down my regular strings after I play them and I've not had any issues so I guess to me, they aren't worth the extra cash.

Also, I'm guessing you're playing acoustic since those are acoustic strings you listed?

Yes i am playing acoustic and i am strummer also a fingerpicker...

So...basically from your own experience they aren't worth the extra cash?

Because i always use a cheapo $5 strings and they just starting to sounds like crap after 3 week.

From my experience, they aren't. Your experience might be different as will be others. I know plenty of people that like them, I personally don't. On my acoustics mostly use DR Rares. I like how they sound.

I'll give elixir a shot though, cuz that coating intrigued me..

so which strings would you recommend for me if you don't mind. am planning to buy the nanoweb light-medium phosphor bronze.

I mean, I don't like them so I don't recommend any of them! Other companies make coated strings too and often for cheaper. EB has the everlast and D'Addario has a coated series as well. :P

That being said, if you want to try them, go for the nanoweb since that's technically the 'standard' one.
