Upgrading CPU+ Mobo

I'm considering upgrading my CPU ( and motherboard ) from an AMD Athlon X4 860K and Gigabyte A68H mobo to something like an AMD FX 6300 or FX 6350 ( although an intel pentium G4560 isn't completely out of the question, would 2 cores affect FPS? ). The reason I want to upgrade is because I've noticed in CPU intensive games the framerates seem to drop lower than in GPU intensive games. E.g. Flight simulator X: Avg FPS I get is usually low/ mid 30s, Overwatch on the other hand will give me 60-70 ( paired with an MSi R7 360, see full build below ). Is it worth upgrading/ are there any other budget CPUs around the £80-90 mark that would work just as well if not better than an FX CPU?

PS: All the games that have better FPS are on the SSD, but that shouldnt affect FPS?

Rig:

CPU: AMD Athlon X4 860K

MOBO: GIGABYTE A68H FM2+

GPU: MSi Radeon R7 360

Storage: 1x ADATA 240GB SSD, 1x SEAGATE BARRACUDA 1TB HDD

PSU: Coolermaster 500W 80+ Power Supply

Cooling: Coolermaster Nepton 120XL Closed loop liquid cooler. Initiated in Push/pull config.

Case CiT goblin mesh

You could go for something like a Ryzen 3 1200 for around $80 USD and just some cheap AM4 compatible motherboard and the cpu would have 4 cores @3.1ghz boost to 3.4ghz but where I live they dont sell them anymore but im not sure about you.

You're better off upgrading to Ryzen, the longer you try to stay on DDR3 RAM the harder it will be to keep up. Something like a Ryzen 3, a cheap board, and an 8 GB DDR4 stick would suffice.

Looking at comparisons between your current CPU and the Ryzen 3 1200, the Ryzen crushes your CPU like an ant. Not to mention tis would open you up for getting a Ryzen 5 or 7 later.

Better than r3 1200, you can find unlocked i5s for the same price. Also it allows him to use his current ddr3 ram.

@PC__Noob

don't buy ANY AMD CPU other than Ryzen, they're all crap, they're all hot, they're all a mess.

at this price point, Intel has much more price/performance than Ryzen, the i3-8100 is a fantastic upgrade :)

Last I checked 4th gen i5 k CPUs were like $300-400. Yes he could use DDR3, but for the same price he could have updated RAM.

I've considered it, although buying that, a mobo and DDR4 RAM is gonna get fairly pricey. Any good other options that would let me use my current DDR3 RAM?

i wouldn't recommend any i3 other than 8th gen, because the older ones are basically the same performance as your current CPU.

but instead you can go for 4th gen i5 or 6th gen i5 used for cheap.

and the reason im recommending 8th gen i3 is because you have an upgrade path up to the i9-9900k, assuming you get a good motherboard with good VRM's to handle that much power.

or you can go with Ryzen with a good motherboard and you have an upgrade path till 2020 :)

also i wanna point out, 8th gen i3 = 4th gen i5 / 6th gen i5 / 7th gen i5 (but NOT 8th gen i5)

assuming they're all at the same frequency.

Alright, thanks man. That was one of the things that I really didn't like about the athlon, very little upgrading compatability. Huge help btw, much appreciated!
