So I am running two 7870s in Crossfire and they are just not holding up. I jumped the gun and bought this monitor (3840x1600) and my GPUs just cannot push it. It's roughly halfway between 1440p and 4K in terms of absolute number of pixels. It has Freesync with a top end range of 75hz.

Because of the Freesync I wanted to stay Team Red, but right now a Vega 56 is higher than a GTX 1080, and a Vega 64 is out of the question. So my options are:

  1. Pay a little more for a Vega 56 and enjoy Freesync, probably in the ~50fps range for most games.
  2. Get a GTX 1080 and try and keep the frame rates above 75 and just use V-Sync.
  3. Get an RX580, run games at 2560x1080 with Freesync, and wait for Vega 2 or whatever to someday come out.
  4. Something else I am missing?

Any thoughts?

Perhaps look at the used market and get 2 AMD GPU's for crossfire ?

This is the problem with freesync, AMD GPU's just dont perform well enough currently to make the most out of good high res high refresh freesync displays.

Just eat the price of Vega 56.  2x RX 470/580 cost more and will not give better performance overall.

Current V56 prices are ~$465.

Grab a 1070 ti, it costs $440 USD and performs better than a Vega 56 while eating less power, it is also a better value than the 1080, because it is basically  a cut down 1080 with GDDR5, and some 128 fewer CUDA cores. When OC'ed a 1070 ti performs like a stock 1080.

I would spend ~$300 on a GTX 1070...

Why? I mean it's still not fast enough that I could get close to 75FPS on my monitor, so I'd still have to bump down to 2560x1080, at that resolution an RX 580 is more than adequate and has Freesync. For $70-$100 cheaper.

Just depends on how much you want to spend now and how well you want games to run while you wait.

The 1070 can support significantly better quality settings at 2560x1080, and should be able to run at the native panel resolution in many more cases compared to a 580.  GTX 1070 can hit 60fps average at 4k in many games by using medium settings.

You could also dig around on ebay for a Fury or Fury X.  Fury goes for around $200, Fury X goes for around $300.
