Fellow enthusiasts,

About a half year ago I bought a Dell XPS 15 laptop. Which runs the games I like rather smooth. (CS: GO | LoL | OS RS) However, It feels different than using a desktop. ( I tried simply connecting a keyboard mouse and monitor but it didnt cut it for me)

The main question I would like to ask is, do you guys have a more advanced way to transform my laptop in a fully functional desktop, or do you recommend building a seperate desktop.

If a build is recommended by you this is some information about it.

I was thinking something like a

1070 -i5 8600k - 8gb ram

budget - for the build + mouse would be +-1000€ and it would be build in 1-2 months (I know this can be tricky with the new graphic cards on the way)

Location - based in NL

Aim - mainly gaming (not too crazy, games like cs go)

monitors - currently 1080p but preferably a 1440p 144hz in the near future if it is within budget.

Peripherals - only a mouse is neccesary thinking of logitech g502 and currrently already have corsair k65 keyboard

overall the look would be as simplistic and small as possible while maintaining suffucient airflow. (Black grey white as colours, no LED’s neccesary)

I mean this isn't really suiited for your budget but what I do is I have an Helios 500 with an i7-8750H 6C/12T at 3.9@ with a full size 1070 and 17" 144Hz G-Sync IPS Panel, now what I do is I got a Logitech G910V2 and a G502V1 and a monitor and I just plug in my Displayport (DP1.4). Well the Helios alone costs 1.9k but it kinda has everything and a bit overkill. 2 Thunderbolt Ports. 3 USB 3.1 Ports, HDMI output and a Displayport 1.4 and you pay a lot for a 144Hz G-Sync monitor so if you can find something like an 8th gen i7 with a 1070 (there are quite a few out there actually for a lot less money) you coult do kinda like a double Montior setup but one is your actual laptop screen and the other a seperate monitor

I already have the laptop. Which has an i7-7700 @+-3.0 with an 1050 4gb and 512gb ssd. But it does not even run similar to a way less powerfull desktop when I attach a monitor etc to it.

the part I dont understand is when you say find an i7 with a 1070 do you mean building a desktop?

Nop laptop. The 8750H blasts the 7700HQ into a different dimension. Way superior. Same with a 1070. Way more powerfull than a 1050. You could try to set your other screen as the main monitor and shut off your laptops screen. You might gain quite a few fps that way if you havent already been doing this

So you suggest to sell this laptop buy a new one and use that as all in one. Instead of building desktop and keep using the laptop for school and browsing?
