Future-proofing question

I've got an Alienware 13R3 with a GTX 1060 and a Core i7 7700HQ and I'm really happy with it. As of now, I can get 60FPS on anything with close to max settings at 1440p, the laptop's native resolution. Another reason I got this was the relatively cheap proprietary Alienware Graphics Amplifier, which I've seen as low as $130, has positive reviews, and is basically designed to work well in tandem with my laptop.

I'm curious as to how future-proof this setup will be. How long will the 7700HQ be able to hold its own at 1440p, paired with basically any GPU in that timeframe?

Its not future proof what so ever. Wont last long at all, not with max settings. Especially with AAA titles.

Can last as long as you want turning stuff down.

Are you talking about the CPU? It doesn't sound like you're talking about the CPU, and that's what my question was about.

Alienware Graphics Amplifier

FYI, this thing is a box that allows you to use an external GPU with your laptop. It'll support anything up to 375W, so basically any modern GPU.

Turning down graphics settings makes games MORE CPU-bound. Just to clarify, this thread is about the CPU.

Its hard to say. Depends how much CPU is limited by "low-power" modifications used in mobile CPUs. i7 in desktop is good for 5+ years. On laptop, even with GPU being irrelevant, I would give 3 years at highest settings and depending on game. If you only play GPU intensive games, then it lasts longer. But for CPU heavy games...
