Hi, so I learnt recently that monitors can only show frames as much as the refresh rate, for example, my 75Hz monitor can only show 75FPS as a maximum, and any remaining frames are excess and aren't shown.

I've wondered, does anyone else limit/cap their FPS (not to be confused with V-sync) in games? In Overwatch and CSGO, I always limit my FPS to 75 due to aforementioned monitor refresh rate, and it feels nice.

The reason I say that is because I feel like the excess frames are using up more resources? I don't know if it's just me.

I cap my frames so my temps don't fly high.

Great, so my thought of excess frames does cause more resource usage?

However, the frames tend to drop every few seconds, which confuses me because capping frames should make them more consistent.

Yeah, that confuses me too. Rocket League capped to 75 sometimes drops to 73-74 which is confuses me too. My assumption is because the cap is a ceiling, it can only go down from the cap.

No, TF2 at 60fps feels very strange, especially since I main Pyro. I'd rather have the framerate flying all over the place.

It's probably dropping to that small range because of frame pacing issues. If it's only a frame rate cap and not a vertical sync implementation, the game's not going to bother to make sure that the frame rate is hitting its frame target, which would be 13.33ms. It's probably not displaying 75 frames but it is most likely rendering 75 frames, just in a sloppy way.

What's the refresh rate of your monitor? It would hurt me and make me paranoid of excess power use if I went full 250FPS on my 75Hz monitor.

60Hz.

If you're going to cap, I'd do double the refresh rate, or 150fps for you. Unless your rig is super murderous on power (and your rig really won't be, nor would it even be in RL, OW or CSGO) it's not going to be too much power used.

I really do like this. It would certainly eliminate that whole frame drop when I limit to exactly my refresh rate.

Yeah, it'll keep response times snappy and noticeable frame drops low.

i just cap framerate with rivatuner

All the games I play have an integrated framerate cap option in settings, so I've never needed it. Although it is nice to learn Rivatuner has it.

Cap your frames about 5 fps higher, so 80 fps. Helps deal with the inconsistency better

I framecap globally and only whitelist to uncap in some games. Definitely give me better frame pacing and temperatures.

Yes, the excess frames do use extra resources but you're still benefiting from a lower input lag because of it.

Not really worth it outside of competitive games though.

I do limit my FPS because of GSync though.

I don't really cap my frame rates, as I'm fine letting my graphics card run however it wants. However, I do use a combination of G-Sync + Fast Sync, or more generically speaking, variable refresh rate + triple buffering. This is the only way to eliminate tearing in all frame rate cases, and tearing I've noticed is a little distracting at times.

Generally, I leave my FPS uncapped. No vsync, no fps limit. Same when I had a standard 60hz display. Some games just feel stuttery/choppy and weird at 60 FPS (mostly Source Engine games). I don't mind the occasional tearing if it means not having increased input lag or weird frame pacing. The only game I have frame capped is Skyrim, since I'm too lazy to edit the .ini to fix the physics issue.

I do, however, have both of my 1080Ti's undervolted to 850mv ( which is about 70% power). 350w vs 500w makes a huge difference in the comfort of my office, especially during the summer.
