i just wanted to know if my local network shared folder can be accessed by others on different network connections and files taken off / copied (smallest file is like 120Mb the biggest file is 6.2Gb i think) i have heard a VPN will do the trick and have seen my father work use a similar solution to access file over 3500 Km away so i see it is possible but i am looking for a free or next to free cost with a somewhat easy setup, i'm currently trying to set up Hamachi cause it was recommended by a friend but i am finding it a little difficult to understand

what router do you have? are you able to admin it?

I'm sure it's a wireless gateway, an old telstra modem. it looks  similar  to this

also for some reason this segregates wireless and Ethernet from communicating

Admin it?

i am new to all of this networking stuff

You can set up OpenVPN server on your computer, configure the router to forward OpenVPN connections to your computer and voila.

god damn telstra

ok it may not have the option for a vpn built in but if its an old telstra one dont think it will

im havnt used the software Hamachi sorry so cant help there.

i was thinking that their should be some sort of option to be able to share files (similar to drop box but held and hosted locally) and i have seen my father connect to the home network and then connect to a "vpn" which then allows him access a folder that is hosted in a different state. so i thought there may have been a software option

the person your trying to let access the 2.5tb of files do you know them because it would be faster and easier to send them by aus post.

yeah i know them but the content on the computer is ever changing and will most likely increase to 3+ in the next 2 months (idk aus post is quite slow around where i live)

i take it your on the nbn?

if you can go to your router and find the brand and model name. i can then see if it will have a vpn option built in

Yeah im on the NBN (Stupid FTTN rather than FTTP)

it is a Technicolor TG799vac i think (if im reading it right)

i didn't think it would,

that sucks a bit though truth be told NBN is better but not by a lot like they were advertising

do you have any recommendations for a new modem / router (i dont understand the difference)

is the PI still connected to your home internet with both devices?

The pi is connected to the router via cable, the router to the modem. Nothing is connected to the PI itself. You connect to the PI over the internet with any device. No need of physical connection.

Then say I have my laptop connected to the same router and have a folder shared to anyone on the network. I can access that with any devices connected to the vpn from anywhere.

You do need to portforward though.

In that case you can make a windows share too and port forward that.

i have set up a network folder to wireless share the folder over my network but its only available when connected to the network at my house, i wanted the files available when i am not at my house and connected to a different network. unless that is what you are saying in which you lost me

does the person your trying to let access your files know tech?

because they may have a router that supports a vpn then all u have to do is connect to there network still would allow them to connect to your files

Then they wouldn't have internet anymore as they are then just connected to the pc with the files.

i think playing games and watching live streams is the only form of tech that they are good at (i'm not certain, they suggested Hamachi which they used over a year ago so they dont have much knowledge on helping me set it up)
