NAS Updates/Upgrades?!

Looking at the idea of possibly dedicating one NAS to specific function or both, upgrading the enclosed drives or configuring in a different way.  

 

What are your thoughts?

 

Current setup...

 

Dual Synology DS 1817+

each with 8 Western Digital Red 3TB drives

 

Only one is currently being used at 15% capacity running home security footage and a backup of all important documents.
