Hey guys. So i need an opinion. I am using an HP Elitebook 8440p as my work laptop, i am working with navigations, some light programing and administrating a page. But i am feeling that my little HP is choking more and more often. Now i am running Windows 7 pro (Came with OEM license) Installed 8 GB of ram (Maximum of it's supported memmory DDR3) Intel core I5 M520 (First gen) and upgraded it with an 240GB liteon M.2 ssd via sata adapter. It's a great, durable little machine so the point of my post is that i want to ipgrade to another more powerful laptop but i don't want to pay a fortune and don't want any U series processors or even any soldered in CPU's. Because i am kinda a hardware guy who likes to take apart things and upgrade them when time comes.

Just a little notice, the current-gen U-series CPUs actually do come in 4 core and 4 core/8 thread configurations, if that's of any usefulness.

Check out my guide on how to scan cover art here!

Hey! I know, pal. But you see i don't like U series processors. Because i had problems earlier with U series CPU's. Had a little Acer Aspire F15 series laptop. Didin't even lasted for a year. The CPU DIED. Because of my workloads.

It's a piece of shit pile of plastic, I'm not sure what you expected out of it.

It's meant to watch movies and YouTube, not programming.

what sort of budget are you eyeing when you say "not a fortune", because the requirements you're looking for arent quite available in the cheap side of the market.

Well.. My budget limit is about 800-900 euros. The laptop can be used aswell. I'm thinking about a HP Elitebook 8570W

Well it actually was not made out of plastic fully. And it came with top end configuration I7 6500U, Nvidia Geforce GTX 950M 4GB. Just when i bought it the seller told me i could to programming and gaming easily. So i did go for it. Now the warranty replaced it with ASUS ROG GL553VD.

look for used elitebook 850 G1 / G2.

they're dualcores, but their dualcores are a lot more snappy than the older quadcore mobile i5/i7 models.

they also disassemble almost blindfolded, i swapped the keyboard on one in about 10 minutes.

they also come with both M.2 and 2.5" sata storage, so you can go with the SSD + HDD combo if you like.

How about the battery life?

if you find one that's not beaten to death yet, before mentioned elitebook 850 G1 / G2's have a "super stupid doubling the laptop thickness" extended battery that i've heard gets you trough about 24 hours.

I used the HP Elitebook 8540P (core i7 version) previously and I would say that it is a pretty good computer for upgrading and tinkering with. It also has good performance with a GPU if you select a version with one. Although it is not the thinnest and lightweight and could be considered as bulky by today's standards. Usually used laptops have a better price to performance in general if you would be willing to have one with a slightly older design. Now, most computers especially laptops have soldered on processors and very limited upgradeability which is why I would recommend buying used for this situation. How much battery life and performance would you want out of your machine, do you have certain specs in mind for your next computer to have?

Hope this information post was helpful  ?,

Yeah, these elitebooks are monsters when it comes in durability. Umm.. No, not exacly. I actually would be sasisfied with the current CPU i have. The bottleneck of my system is ram and lack of dedicated graphics. I was kinda interested in Hp elitebook 8770w series, but they man are heavy and big. :D So basicly it has to be 15.6" inch or even better a 14". As i mentioned i need that the machine would support atleast more then 8gb of ram, and would jave more then 2-3 USB ports. And.. Maybe a backlit keyboard, because sometimes i work late and don't like to work with lights turned on. Thanks!

the elitebook g1/g2's already last about that time on internal battery, and the external one is like.. "several times more"

it does also make the laptop twice the size :P

Did watch what's on the market and in my region- Lithuania 840 are more popular, and prices aren't that high from 200 to 400 euros. :V

the G1's are 4-5 years old by now, thats about their price by now.

upside of that is most of the ones out there are probably corporate surplus from companies who put a lot of attention to their IT infrastructure.

Well atleast here in Lithuania most of the IT related companies atleast how much i've seen now (I got a lot of relations with other companies, service them ect) so most of them use HP PROBOOKS usually 450's G1, G2 etc. Elitebooks are not that common for some strange reason,  elitebooks are not that common here, i got mine from office in Norway as a "Waste" although it was only few years old and it was practicly in brand new condition.
