What if for the next episode of sketchy heatsinks, instead of a heatsink there's just a mountain of thermal paste

would thermal throttle within seconds... The TIM only provides an interface to transfer the heat from the IHS to the cooler. Without a cooler, the TIM is useless.

You might be right but it would still make for a great video.

I really do not see how pouring lots of paste would make for a great video, especially when there's really nothing to build or analyze.

Thermal paste is supposed to only facilitate the heat transfer. It would instantly throttle and than shut off.

I have a better idea. Linus can put a mountain of thermal paste on the CPU and then sit a heatsink on top of the mountain without a fan or anything. It's guaranteed to work.

It wouldn't really do anything, might as well run the cpu without anything on it.

In fact it probably makes things worse at that point.

Agreed, would be more an insulator than conductor at that point.

Too much termal paste on each other starts acting as an insulator, making it overheat faster.

I once had a laptop where the gpu heatsing floats 2mm above the the gpu, put a thick layer of thermal paste on it and it overheated in seconds.

A good idea for the next episode would be to get a peltier element and cool it with power.

What if they took a pre-existing heatsink and filled the gaps between the fins with TIM. I think that would be a great video..
