Hey Guys! I'm thinking about building a brand new gaming PC utilizing some parts I just got. I'm trying not to build anything too expensive so $1000 USD is about my budget for remaining parts. I have compiled a list of parts based on this video, and I'm curious if there are any suggestions for what else I might need or some different suggestions for better parts (SPECIFICALLY the motherboard, hard drive, CPU, and cooling). I mainly play games like PUBG, Battlefield, CS:GO, and older strategy games like Age of Empires II HD. I don't need anything crazy: I just wanted to build my own gaming PC that has good framerate for most games and will last me a couple years.

Here is a list of parts I'm thinking about using with purchase links:

Case

Corsair Obsidian 750D Fullt Tower $149.99

PSU

Corsair CX 750 watt $59.99 non modular

Motherboard

ASUS H170 PRO GAMING LGA 1151 Intel H170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 ATX Intel Motherboard $200?*

Hard Drive

SAMSUNG 850 EVO 2.5" 1TB SATA-6GBPS V-NAND 3bit MLC $230-290

CPU

Core i7-8700k $347.00*

CPU Cooling: ????

GPU

GTX 1060 6GB $280

Single Monitor: one that supports 2k or 4k or at least won't hinder my PC at 1080p max settings

Additional tools:

Magnet/Demagnetizer $5

Toolkit $15

Parts I already have:

GPU

GTX 1060 6GB $280

PSU

Corsair CX 750 watt $59.99 non modular

24 to 8 pin adapter $7.58

Single Monitor: Dell

Keyboard: Razer Blackwidow

Mouse: Razor Orochi

Headset: Turtlebeaches

*Note: I have not checked the compatibility of CPU with motherboard. I have no idea what to look for in a motherboard and would greatly appreciate feedback or suggestions.

Thanks for your help!!

I'd go with:

1. i5 8400 - you're not needing the i7, especially if you're using the 1060.

2. I like Gigabyte motherboards, look at the AORUS Gaming 3 board or Ultra Gaming (other folks will post better ones probably)

3.  Reduce the SSD to 500GB  or 250GB to save money, get a 2TB 7200 HDD for mass storage.

4.  You need memory - G. Skill 16GB 3200Mhz - https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231941&cm_re=g._skill_16gb_3200-_-20-231-941-_-Product

Some ideas for you.  You basically built a top end system with a mid-range GPU.  I think you should scale back the build to mid-range to keep it balanced and save money, based on what you play.

If you can, do a pcpartpicker.com list so folks can tweak and report.

Okay. I meant to add RAM to the list but forgot. I'll make a pcpartpicker list once I have a little bit of time. Thank you so much!

Glad to help, but also not to NEVER EVER buy something based on my recommendation alone!!!  Others here have so much more knowledge and experience, wait for some more feedback before buying :)

Unless it's a 1440p Ultrawide monitor.  Then buy no matter what :)

H170 boards are not compatible with any Intel 8th gen CPU. Also the 8700K is wasted on anything but a Z370 board, since Z370 is the only chipset that allows overclocking.

If you want to stick with the i7 and have a cheaper B360 board, then I recommend the i7 8700 instead. Otherwise drop down to the i5 8400 + B360 combo.

New Build (The Compromise): CPU - i7 9700K @ 5.1Ghz Mobo - ASRock Z390 Taichi | RAM - 16GB G.SKILL TridentZ RGB 3200CL14 @ 3466 14-14-14-30 1T | GPU - ASUS Strix GTX 1080 TI | Cooler - Corsair h100i Pro | SSDs - 500 GB 960 EVO + 500 GB 850 EVO + 1TB MX300 | Case - Coolermaster H500 | PSUEVGA 850 P2 | Monitor - LG 32GK850G-B 144hz 1440p | OSWindows 10 Pro.

Peripherals - Corsair K70 Lux RGB | Corsair Scimitar RGB | Audio-technica ATH M50X + Antlion Modmic 5 |

CPU/GPU history: Athlon 6000+/HD4850 > i7 2600k/GTX 580, R9 390, R9 Fury > i7 7700K/R9 Fury, 1080TI > Ryzen 1700/1080TI > i7 9700K/1080TI.

Other tech: Surface Pro 4 (i5/128GB), Lenovo Ideapad Y510P w/ Kali, OnePlus 6T (8G/128G), PS4 Slim.

I would suggest that you wait for the 9th Gen Intel Processors. Probably get the i7, or the i9 if the budget will allow. I'm very optimistic that it's going to come out this year. Stick with your GTX 1060 for now, then upgrade when the need arises. It's a good idea to get a powerful CPU now, so that you won't spend on a new platform when you upgrade your GPU.

If ever you will be buying now, which I don't recommend. You should be looking at something like this: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/mj8ddX

I'm very much in favor of building a system with a slightly stronger CPU so I can upgrade the GPU later on if I have the need since I got the 1060 free as a gift from a friend.

So you're saying to wait for 9th generation then build something similar to that pcpartpicker list? Also, if I were planning to later upgrade the GPU to something higher than a 1060, what would be a recommended CPU? Would an i5 be enough or should I get something higher like an i7?

What is your budget and what are you using now?  Those are fairly important to figure out if you should wait for Intel's most expensive mainstream processor or not.
