Can't install OS from USB

GPT is only for UEFI. that's why your laptop won't boot from that.

Hi LTT Forum... I did f* up (I think)... Hear me out.

I did install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on my HP ProBook 4330s, that is cool and all. I want Windows 7 back. So I did download Rufus, ripped my Windows Install Disk into one ISO file and installed it over a 32GB SanDisk USB stick. I thought, hey, all will work fine. I plug in the USB stick in my USB 2.0 port (Because windows 7 is very funny with installing from USB 3.0) and I press ESC > Boot Device and my USB and it loads into Linux Ubuntu. I thought "Hmm okay maybe the USB 3.0 then" so I did power it off, plugged it inside my USB 3.0 port and the same issue.

As I understand, BIOS is the first level, so anything that goes through BIOS (yes it don't have UEFI) overwrite the boot, as when I select my USB, but in this case, it do not.

What am I doing wrong? How can I tell my BIOS to boot into my USB that I made through RUFUS. I did search Ubuntu forums of how to "remove" the OS but the boot-repair does nothing for me.

Help me out because I am not rich and I do not have money to buy a new laptop, yes, even not for 199 USD... I been thinking of getting a new SSD for it, the cheapest shit out there just to install Windows again but is there a way to avoid doing this.

Please help.

PS: I did select to encrypt the "OS" during Ubuntu install but BIOS loads before that.

Thanks... :(

You should be able to get the iso straight form the windows website, no hassle at all. It may just be a problem with how you made yours.

Sounds to me like you didn't rip the disc properly.

Okay I will get the ISO directly from Microsoft, shall I still use Rufus? Is there any settings I should change? GPT MBR etc?

Thanks.

No, the defaults should work just fine.

Either use the M$ tool to prepare the drive or WouUSB from within Linux

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8 sudo apt update sudo apt install woeusb

if it won't boot from the USB that means the drive doesn't have a correct boot loader.

can you try selecting mbr only in rufus? if it doesn't have UEFI that should work better, because it makes it for BIOS only.
