Random DC from Wifi

rphawks

I've owned this PC for a little over a year now. I just got back from vacation today and tried to play some Overwatch. In the middle of the game everyone froze, and I disconnected. I was able to rejoin and thought it was an isolated incident. I was dumb enough to keep playing (losing SR in the process), and it kept happening. During these small bursts of no internet, everything is disconnected and pages don't load. It's not my wifi though, as I make sure my phone was able to look stuff up on the wifi. My PC has a WiFi card (Gigabyte GC-WB867D-I). I think that's where the problem is. I checked that it was plugged in properly into the PCIe slot and that the cables for the antenna were connected to the card.

I've run out of ideas as to why it's not working. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hey mate,

 - Tried a different PCIe slot?

 - Checked for updated drivers?

 - Disabled and enabled WiFi Adapter in Windows?

I had numerous times where incorrect drivers were applied and it completely froze my PC on multiple occasions. So make sure your drivers are up to date.

1. I have not yet tried another PCIe slot, but this one's been working for a long time. I'll get back to you once I've done this.

2. Yes. Updated the Intel Wireless driver but it didn't change anything

3. Just did that. I'm going to see if it still happens. If it does, I'll switch PCIe slots.

Bugger mate,

have you got a USB Wireless adapter by any chance?

And,  have you also reset your router when you came home from your vacation?

Cheers.

No, I don't. I reset my router as soon as I encountered the problem. I made it through a full game without issue. I have Avast installed and I think it might be the culprit. I disabled it and didn't run into the problem. I'm going to enable it again and see if it happens.

Maybe Avast has some type of firewall or web protection that most anti-virus software comes with, try disabling that component and give it a crack.

Thanks for the updates mate.

Looked up some stuff and switched around some settings that some people said were their problems (that were defaulting to not the best option). Testing again...

Are any other devices noticing any problems with the WiFi? Or do we think it's just specific to your PC?

And obviously it's not just specific to Overwatch but a general WiFi issue? Are you running any Anti-Virus/Malware that could have Web Protection that could conflict with your connectivity? It's a really strange issue...hard to work this out...

I don't think it's specific to Overwatch, but I can't catch it if I'm not playing Overwatch. It's just a brief 5-second disconnect. Then everything is back to normal. I am running Avast, but I disabled all of the filters. It may still be running something in the background, so I'm going to try to uninstall it and see what happens.

Interesting...it's almost like the WiFi receiver shuts off for a brief second. This would make more sense if it only happened in game, could be a power issue.

How are your temps when playing Overwatch, not too hot?

@ZacoAttaco @Netivity Update: I found the problem... sorta. When I crash, the error is a DNS error (1014) in Event Viewer. Any ideas? Windows has a support page for it but it doesn't have Windows 10 listed as one of the systems it affects. Could just be old, but...
