I am buying a new higher end GPU and need it as an upgrade for 1440p gaming and better VR gaming. Before I was gonna buy an Asus 1070ti strix for around $700(plus tax) new on Amazon and I recently found a Zotac Amp 1070ti for $500, however, it has been used for "light mining" and I don't know if I should buy a used card. I also found other deals like a 1080 for $750 and don't know what to look for when buying a used card if I should at all.

Thank you!

I bought an r9 290 that was mined out , regretted it big time.

Getting real sick of people saying mining doesn't hurt gpu's. usually new people who haven't experienced a warped silicon nightmare that is a used gpu.

290 at 100c is quite the different story to a gtx 1070ti running at 60c.

The only thing that dies with current mining gpus is the fan. The card itself is fine

Where are you that they cost so much?

I would get a mined card. Already have. Plan on getting a pair of 1080ti's soon that have been minded as well. No reason no to really.

If you upgrade the PC regularly (2< yrs between GPU upgrades) than mining GPUs can be a great option, but if you want to use the system for years on end without upgrading you'd be better off with new or used for not-mining cards

yeah that's what everyone says, and yes I do plan on upgrading regularly (2 to 3 years) but is there still a gamble the card will just die on me a few months after use? or is the gamble for gpus a diff scale and a matter of year?

No, a 1070Ti is not going to make a dent in mining. With free power you're going to make a paltry $1-1.35usd/day When it comes to mining, buy super high end, or build legions of the newest hardware. WHEN THE HARDWARE IS NEW. I prefer the high end stuff (and had both better spacial density and was far more flexible profit wise the last year of mining as the returns have been shot) By going with 1080Ti's and ASICs.
Having low end cards, cheap cards, or just older cards is just not worth it. The scaling sucks and the useful mining lifespan is just as bad as the useful gaming lifespan (12-18mo tops). Dribbling out returns afterwards is just shitty.

All the real money is in trading tho.

I topped out at 26x 1080Ti's (21 of them running), a 1080, two 980's, 184 CPU threads (my home server farm) and a pair of L3+'s last year.

Also, the GPU's and RAM are not the problems when mining. The problem is that some card designs (EVGA for instance) have shit cooling for the VRM's. The VRM's will die many years before any other failures. (I had 6x EVGA SC2 1080Ti's die and a pair of PNY Reference cards)

I dont see the problem?

If the pascal cards are kept well in a farm ( undervolted, to get maximum efficiency) then they are about 60c, and they age better than in a gaming pc, because there is no heat cycles.

So mining on pascal cards is pretty safe, no need to base all mining cards off on your 1 bad experience.

Don’t see why you would think a card would randomly die. If that was the case, they would be dropping like flys while mining. Out of the 300 we run as a group, we lost 2. Shitty Msi cards with crap coolers.

The is no answer. It’s a simple choice you have to make.
