Mobo, GPU or both?

Specs:

Mobo: MSI Z97 PC-MATE  
CPU: Intel I5 4690K  
PSU: Evga 500B   
GPU: XFX R9 280/MSI HD7770/ Asus GT630 

 

 

So, any GPU with external power connected to the top slot of my mobo doesn't give an output. (HD 7770 or an R9 280). A GT 630 will give an output with no issue. When I connect the HD 7770 to the 4x slot on the Z97 PC-MATE (only other pci-e slot thats 'good'), everythign works fine. When I connect the R9 280 After giving it any load for a couple of seconds it crashes as shown on the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fjw8OK8zk4. So far I've tried a brand new PSU (Cooler Master MasteWatt 550) and the same things occur, so my power supply isn't the issue. Question is, what is broken? Mobo and GPU or only mobo/only gpu? (

 

I've reinistalled drivers multiple times. And until 2-3 weeks ago the 7770 was working on the top (x16) slot but I went ot turn on the PC one day and there was no video.

 

I'll also add that when either the HD7770 or the R9 280 are in the top slot, the monitor doesn't say that there is no HDMI signal detected, but the screen is black.

Seems like both the HD 7770 and R9 280 degraded so much, they dont sustain their 3D clocks for long.

 

Have you checked the GPU temperatures on both AMD cards yet?

None of the cards overheat.

 

The 7770 works perfectly fine on the 4x slot and gets expected FPS without any throttling.

 

I've only had the R9 280 since June of 2015 and I'd expect a GPU to work for longer than that.

Got it brand new. XFX are being dicks though and have lifetime warranty in the US only, and not europe for the double dissipation models, which is pretty scammy afaik.

 

I've asked to talk to ppl 'higher up' about it and had 0 responses for 2 months now from their support, (its been around 2 months since the GPU started crashing like in the video. Then the top slot seems to have given way recently and thats when I started asking for help).

 

I asked how much would sending it in for a repair (Linus iMac style) would cost and waiting on a reply for that aswell.

It was working fine until one day I powered on the PC and it had no output. Would it be worth opening up the R9 and seeing if anything looks burned/bad?

well, for fun I guess? It's not usable if it keeps on dropping out. There's no loss in taking it apart

Will test it on a friends pc if I get the chance. Could be that the mobo is dying and can't deliver quite enough power to it. But something is probably dying. Wish I knew what the problem was though,
