So, I have a pair of ath m50x's, and have been starting to find them lackluster. So my question is this, I have a budget of 2-300$ I could spend on an amp, or I could sell them for ~100$ and spend to 3-400$ on a new headset. Mic is no object, I don't need one, just wondering which would yield a better increase in quality.

The HD6XX + Schiit stack is a solid option unless you don't like the sound signature.

For $400 I would get a Grado SR325e, for a closed back without amp I would get the ESS 422H ($200). Also the Sennheiser HD 660s may be obtainable under 400 second hand, and those sound good without amp. Also consider that the Schiit stack ($200) is a solid amp/DAC that is going to work fine with most headphones.

I disagree with "true 7.1" headphones.

I would much rather have a nice amp and stereo headphones. Sound will be much greater and generally positional audio will be better.
