Second AP for VPN Access

I'm currently running a network with an Asus AC5300.

Can run VPN via my network so my smart TVs / AppleTV / chromecast, however, it's affecting latency during gaming.

 

I'm wondering if I can add an AP (Tenda router converted into an AP) via LAN to the router, configure VPN on the AP.

If I need VPN access, I connect to the SSID of the Tenda AP; if I don't, I connect to the Asus router.

 

Is this possible/viable?
