Low GPU performance

Go to solution Solved by AngryBeaver,

The problem is the AMD 8 core. It just doesn't have the IPC or ST performance to support the 1050ti.

Hi there! I recently bought and built myself a "budget" PC. And I'm experiencing low gpu performance when playing video games and video rendering.

Spoiler

CPU: AMD fx8350 octocore 4.1ghz

CPU Cooler:  stock cooler (installing a 212 Evo very soon).

GPU: MSI GTX 1050ti 4gb

RAM: 8gb

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 3gb

Storage: 120gb Kingston a400 SSD (C Drive)

                320gb Western Digital WDC WD3200AAJS-65B4A0

                250gb Samsung ST250DM001 HD256GJ

OS: Windows 10 Pro 64bit (up to date)
PSU: Cooler Master Masterwatt Lite 500w

BIOS Version: 86.07.42.00.5a

Display:  dell 1704fpt (upgrading to an Acer K222HQL 1080p monitor)

I have tried everything I can think of. I reinstalled the nvidia drivers by booting into safe mode with DDU and then installing the freshly downloaded ones. I've kept windows up to date, I've disabled Vertical sync, lowered game and video preview settings, increasing the power in MSI after burner, but no avail. I get 30-50fps in most games and appalling video preview and rendering performance.

The GPU idles at around 40-50 Celsius, and under load 50-70 Celsius. This varies but the fans do kick in and keep it cool. The highest I've seen the GPU ram get to is about 1.5-2gbs and overall activity in task manager never gets above 55%.

However, the CPU with the current cooler I got from a mate's old server tends to idle around 40 c and the highest I've seen it under load9 is 80-85. Could my CPU be thermal throttling?

I tend to play World of Tanks the most. When on Max and Ultra settings I get 30/40fps with drops of 15. The cpu is near idleing and the GPU is around 50% usage on task manager. Other people with the same spec CPU, ram and GPU as me report to get at least 60fps.

And btw, yes high performance mode is on.

Help would be very much appreciated!

What games.

As stated at the bottom of my post, World of Tanks.

I also tend to play Train Sim 2018, Supreme Commander 2, World of Warships, and Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare

Your GPU could be slowing itself down because its hot. If it is a 55% that means your GPU is performing at half power.

What could I do to fix this? Surely the GPU would optimise itself and it's fan speeds without user intervention? The fans kick in at about 60c

something is holding your GPU back by about 45%...you play single-threaded CPU intensive games with a CPU that has very poor IPC and low per core performance so it's no surprise to see your GPU load and FPS take a dive in such games...sry!

Well thanks! But is there any way i could optimise my cpu? I'm pretty sure that, World of tanks and WoWs are multi thread games that support optimisation for 2, 4, 6, and 8 core cpus. This was introduced in update 9.18

I sort of low key guessed. It's a brilliant CPU and it's quick but i guess for gaming then it's not the best

it's really hit and miss depending on the game with that CPU...sometimes it's fine, sometimes it's aweful.
