total noob question. So I recently got a laptop, an asus FX503 (https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/FX503/). it has a i5, 3GB GTX1060 and 8GB of ram (DDR4) - https://www.harveynorman.com.au/asus-gamer-fx503vm-e4178t-15-6-inch-gaming-laptop.html

now my question. So i want to upgrade the ram to 16GB, can i just get another 8GB ram stick and put it in the spare slot (i'm presuming its 1 8GB card) - https://www.pccasegear.com/products/33138/corsair-cmso8gx4m1a2133c15-8gb-1x8gb-ddr4-sodimm. or will i have to get 2 identical Sticks for it to work? - https://www.pccasegear.com/products/34639/corsair-vengeance-cmsx16gx4m2a2400c16-16gb-2x8gb-ddr4-sodimm

I would like to save money but i don't know if two different types of ram are compatible as everything i have build has had identical ram sticks, not mixed and matched ones

So

You can't have 2 diffrent makes, e.g. corsair and then g.skill as far as I know

But you can have diffrent mhz

So if the stick in there is 2400mhz and then you get 3000mhz, there both operate at the lower mhz

Have a look what's in there atm and then get another 8gb stick

thanks for that. i will pull it apart tomorrow to see what it is but i don't think that it will be something that i can get (as the main websites i have seen Sodimm drives for sale near me only really offer corsair and kingston )

@WickedStarfishhttps://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.lifehacker.com.au/2010/07/what-are-the-rules-on-mixing-two-different-types-of-ram/amp

And here

However, as long as the latencies (e.g. 5-5-5-18), and voltage match (e.g. 2.1V) it should be ok. However to do this it would require you to go into the BIOS and change some stuff, which, if you are a novice should be left alone.

Laptops from my experience aren't picky with ram, I've swapped sticks speeds and capacity. Like two totally different sticks and the laptop works way better. Sure it's not recommended but it works. But I'd suggest getting the same stick if you can for the best results. If you're unable to get the same brand, research what ram comes with the laptop and try to match it closely.

Corsair 4000D RGB

Asus B550 Tuf Gaming II

Asus 7700XT Tuf Gaming

AMD 5600x3d

32gb 3200mhz gskil

You can mix and match brands.

Just try to match the specs such RAM frequency and CAS latency.

Mismatched frequencies will work, but the faster RAM will downclock to match the slower one. It won't have much of a tremendous difference in real world use, but it's also not exactly wise
