at the price-point the Ryzen 5 2600 and a B350 and potentially an X370 board along with the mentioned DDR4 are also options. Though the 8400 will generally out game it by a variable margin depending on the games CPU core utilization(poorer multi-core utilization tends to heavily favor the 8400 while better multi-core utilization tilts things more towards the Ryzen 5 rarely giving it some minor wins)

An i5 8600k is a good option too, having good single threaded performance running about $250, and a motherboard for it will cost about $130

There are at least two games that I have seen repeated bench results where the 8600K actually beats the 8700K when using same RAM Clock+Latency and same GPU OCs.

You currently have an AMD FX-4300 (PassMark CPU score of 4,679).

You want to buy a new CPU and motherboard for €400 (around £360).

You will be buying DDR4 RAM separately.

Coffee Lake (Intel) motherboards start at around £50.

AM4 (AMD) motherboards start at around £45.

Your options (along with PassMark CPU scores - higher is better):

  • AMD Ryzen 7 2700X (16,937) £295
  • Intel Core i7-8700K (15,990) £330 (a bit too expensive)
  • AMD Ryzen 7 1800X (15,405) £285
  • AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (15,298) £260
  • Intel Core i7-8700 (15,248) £285
  • AMD Ryzen 7 1700X (14,620) £265
  • AMD Ryzen 7 1700 (13,745) £260
  • Intel Core i5-8600K (12,827) £230
  • Intel Core i5-8600 (12,273) £210
  • Intel Core i3-8300 (8,760) £135

I hope this helps.
