Hello,

my CPU (7700K) has overheating problems since the day I bought it on launch-day.

2017

  • Non-OC pushes my temps to 100°C, I narrowed the problem down to wrong mainboard-firmware (non OC was like 1,35V) - after the update my voltage was fine and temps dropped to around 90°C - so I don't bother investigating further.
  • I assumed that my temp-sensor was broken due to incredible fast rising temps in a stress-test. My CPU idles around 50°C, I hit it with a load an after 0,00001 seconds: 99°C. Buuuut I couldn't verify it.

2018:

  • I upgraded from BeQuiet Dark Rock 3 to an Alphacool Eisbaer 240 - temps didn't change a bit.
  • Then (last week) I noticed my case getting really hot. I don't have a thermal-camera but I would say my AIO is around 80°C to the touch. The outside of the Case is getting really warm aswell.
  • Overclocking (even to 4,6ghz) results in instant throttling to 3,9ghz.

So far I checked:

  1. Thermal-Paste (Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut).
  2. Mounting (redid it like 10 times - I know what I am doing. Built 4 PCs for family members since then).
  3. Pump died? nope - flowmeter in Bios tells me that it is working correctly, I can see the flow-meter on the pump turning.
  4. I used an i5 6400 in the exact system. Temps behaved as it should be. Low 50°C? something like that.

So, dearest community, what should I do:

  • delid this nightmare (at this point I am wondering if the Intel-TIM is even present in my CPU...) - I wanna check it though.
  • sell it as defect on eBay and just purchase a new one.

Regarts from Germany,

Christian

yeah that sounds like a classic 7700k to me

you should delid it if you have the tools

ASUS X470-PRO • R7 1700 4GHz • Corsair H110i GT P/P • 2x MSI RX 480 8G • Corsair DP 2x8 @3466 • EVGA 750 G2 • Corsair 730T • Crucial MX500 250GB • WD 4TB

Delidding and replacing TIM with LM seems a much better idea IMO.

Main rig: i7 8086K // EVGA Z370 Micro // 16GB Gskill TridentZ 3200Mhz CL14 // Sapphire Pulse RX 7800XT// a variety of noctua cooling // Corsair RM750x v2 //  Fractal Meshify C

Secondary rig: R5 3600 // MSI B450i Gaming Plus // 16GB Gskill FlareX 3200CL14 // MSI GTX 1080ti Gaming X // Cooler Master V650 // Fractal Meshify C

Audio setup: Audient iD4 // Adam A7X // Sennheiser HD 650 // Sennheiser HD 25-II // Audio Technica M50x // Sennheiser Momentum 4

What case are you using? If it's something airflow optimized, it means it is time for a delid, otherwise I would change the case out for something with better airflow.

I am using an BeQuiet Pure Base 600 (open top) with 4x Noctua 12 something.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hello!

Here's an update on my problem. I delidded the CPU - everything under the Heatspreader seemed fine. I changed the the TIM but the problem more or less is the same. I achieved lower Idle-Temps (52°C) - but with a CPU-Burner all Cores hit 100°... Before throwing out my 7700k I wanted to change my Cooler (with NH-D15S) to see if there is a problem - should arrive tomorrow.

I saw some Air-Bubbles in my AIO which I didn't noticed before. Here's a picture: May this cause the my issues?
