problem with new 1440p monitor

So I just bought a 1440p 165 Hertz monitor and everything is working fine when I go into a game then close the game it forces down to 1080p. when I try to change the setting it back and windows or an Nvidia control panel I'll click apply it will change 1440p for a second then it will go directly back to 1080P and I can't change it until I restart my computer any ideas what's going on?

Try lowering the refresh rate. Some monitors can't hit their peak refresh rates at their native resolution. You can do this in nVidia control panel.
