"unresponsive" pixels

So I've had a Dell laptop for a year now and I really enjoy it, but recently (last few months) I've been having an issue with the display. So basically the part of my screen which touches the edge of the keyboard area (at the bottom) has become "unresponsive" but only while the surrounding image is black or very dark. I think it's got something to do with the screen being pushed into the keyboard chin so I've stopped closing my laptop. Any ideas how to fix it?
