Hello,

May I have your advice on this question?

So, I am willing to upgrade my old 2008 Budget Laptop to something newer and more powerful. I will use it for Schoolwork, potentially taking it into class, but also video editing and medium gaming, if possible at 60 FPS at Medium settings.

Here are the possibilities I have narrowed it down to:

  1. Building a PC myself, looking like this: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/yDdbw6  and

1.1 Getting a Windows Ultrabook (suggestions welcome, 1000€ Max) or

1.2 Getting a MacBook or MacBook Air

2. Buying the new Quad-core 13 inch MacBook Pro with 16GB RAM and adding an eGPU with something like a RX580 (either the BMD eGPU (RX 580 8GB) or the Razer Core V2 or X (1070 if supported, else RX 580 8GB)

Please: the Parts for the PC are to 95% fix, so unless there is something dramatic, there is no advice needed. Yes, I know the h100i v2 is overkill, but I love its aesthetics.

Thank you very much for your help!

What video editing software?

Should grab the RX 580 over the 1060 6GB, will save you money on free-sync in the future.

Would never suggest a mac, just grab any old thinkpad with an i7 at least, wouldn't worry about external GPUs, why would you need that exactly if you already have a desktop?

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

I think you didn’t quite understand: I do not own a desktop and am stuck between possibility 1.1 (PC + Windows Laptop), 1.2 (PC + MacBook 12“) and 2 (MacBook Pro + eGPU).

So just do the first one? with a used i7 thinkpad of some kind

You should also be able to get an i7 8700 in that desktop, or a Ryzen 6 or 8 core, not as useful if you're using premiere though due to recent updates.

I would suggest that you get an MSI GS65. It's relatively slim and lightweight (except for the powerbrick), and has the gaming prowess you need. Battery life is also great.

It's fun to always have a powerhouse in your bag. As long as there's a power outlet, like in a coffee shop, you can fire up some games or edit videos.

Hello,

I've just recently watched Linus' Video about eGPU and it really looks like a solution for me. I really wanna get rid of my PC now and go on my laptop and monitor (external).

However I could not understand clearly, which resolution could be actually supported/displayed when I would use this (laptop + eGPU + monitor) set up?  Would it be limited by native laptop resolution? Or eGPU with monitor could work fine on higher than a laptop resolution?  Any ideas?

With regards

Hello Michael,

If you use a eGPU and a external monitor you can use the display's resolution. Mind if you do go for the Apple route with a eGPU only the AMD cards work out of the box. For Nvidia you would need to mess around a bit (Guides are on Google). If you don't go for the Macbook (Pro) mind you will need a laptop with Thunderbolt 3 or else the eGPU would be bottlenecked by the connection.

Cheers

The eGPU with monitor will follow the resolution of the monitor and not the laptop. Some things to note though.

Baseline GPU performance = 100%

eGPU + External Monitor + TB3 x4 PCI-e = 85%

eGPU + Laptop Monitor + TB3 x4 PCI-e = 75%

eGPU + External Monitor + TB3 x2 PCI-e = 70%

eGPU + Laptop Monitor + TB3 x2  PCI-e = 50%

So make sure to choose a laptop with x4 PCI-E Lanes on its Thunderbolt 3 Port
