probably because the vcore was controlled via your VID. in Bios you have no turbo clocks nor huge load on your CPU. It'll run with its basecock in bios, regardless what you set it to be. You have to read/view some overclocking guides before randomly putting numbers in your UEFI by yourself. This will warrant atleast decent results.

Good place to start:

I just got the 8700k and started overclocking. I know that poeple gets to 5 ghz without much trouble, so I overclocked mine to 4.9ghz, but the temps are a bit too high, i think. My temps were 99 to 100 degrees on all cores on average, and im cooling with a corsair h100i v2. Does anyone know if these temps are normal?

I've heard about lots of people with the same setup with 80s to 90 degrees.

My friend's actually got 5.1ghz with 87 degrees max on all cores! (Wow)

Yeah it depends how lucky you got with the chip (silicon lottery and all that yknow?)

poop

Sounds normal. The 8700k runs pretty hot so you either might want to get a bigger AIO or delid (or go for an NH-D15s if you want that big arse piece of heatsink and poop brown fans)

9 year old Noctua NH-D14 /2 original fans

5Ghrz/1.285 adapt. v. /0AVX /16Gb@3200 / with CPU warranty

Did test with only 2 CPU fans for 8 hrs / prime95 AVX load @ 19c room temp:

this depends on the voltage

your friend might run 5ghz at 1.3V but you might need 1.4V just the way it is

what voltage are you using?

also you're mostlikely looking at delidding

I haven't changed the original settings. Is this a good sign?

This means you are running auto vcore settings? This is a sign that you might actually have already damaged/degraded your CPU...

But thermal wise it could be good news.

i would not recommend that what so ever,

if you're aiming for 5ghz 1.35V is probably the max your cooler can handle since you're not delidded, if not you might have to setle for lower clocks unles you delid.

i would only go up to 1.42V if you're delidded and have decent temps.
