Boot drive question

I am trying to replace my boot drive as it is too small to update windows and would like to upgrade to a M.2 SSD, however I don't understand what is necessary in a boot drive for optimal performance, and was just gonna grab a samsung 960 pro, can someone help me find a cheaper option for this, I want at least 500 GB space for any apps and extras, and my motherboard is an MSI Z170a PC Mate

960 drives are last gen, get the 970 instead.

Why pro, the 970 evo is basically the same for all consumer uses. You probalby don't need mlc.

What are you using it for? A sata drive might be worth the savings here.

the PC is used as an all rounder, videogames, emulators, streaming youtube, and media center, I want to try to preserve the sata slots for my game library, also I meant the 970, sorry about that

there will always be 2 sata slows disabled when using that m.2 so take that in note.

Id just replace that with a bigger sata ssd. That way you won't have to get a pcie to sata card.
