Today the computer stopped booting windows and would come up with a no bootable drive error. Normally this can be caused by a windows update. I put the drive into an external enclosure to try to recover the data off of it. The drive is recognized and I can access the root C:\ of the drive, but when I try to go deeper into User files or any sub folder , File explorer. I am trying to see if there is any way I can get the data off. I know its a long shot, but i figured i would ask.

Thank you for any help,

Tom

Id make a image first with a program l;ike ddrescue.

Then get the files from the image.

I tired to run the dd-rescue. It seems the source drive (damaged one) is not seen by the Ubuntu install. is there a better Linux OS for me to use? or am I doing something wrong. I see the Drive when i boot the computer up in the bios and as a selectable drive when I go to select the Ubuntu live disk.

I am getting a ata1.00: srst failed (errno=-16) when i start the live disk

if thats the case your drive is most likely failed beyond the point of being able to do anything on your desktop. Your gonna need a data recovery service.

Have fun doing IT, im doing a simmilar thing now at work. Trying to get a small business back to modern and secure systems.
