Laptop ram memory upgrade( help)

Go to solution Solved by Dissitesuxba11s,

Lower speed memory should work, but your laptop would default to the lowest speed, in the case of mismatching 1600MHz and 1866MHz RAM, it would operate at 1600MHz. Here is a list of compatible RAM, but do note that these are all Crucial parts. You probably already used it but here is Kingston's suggested RAM for your laptop. As shown, you can use lower speed RAM or 1866MHz ones.

For what went wrong, have you tried it again and checked if the issue persists? Maybe you touched something in the connections that go to the screen and it's fixed itself when you used your friend's RAM.

Hello guys, i am having a kind of a problem. (ill try and make it short and simple)
I have a laptop asus x550jx which has only 4gb of ram (integrated memory) and i have decided to update it. Bought yesterday a stick Kingston/Nanya 4GB 2RX8 PC3L-12800S 1600MHz
http://prntscr.com/k4z936 <- pic of the ram purchased.
And since then , i have noticed great improvement in games, with one single issue. After some time , my screen freezes and display starts flickering , looks like this:
 http://prntscr.com/k4z9mp

I thought my graphics card was failing when i researched more about the problem and decided to sell the laptop all until my friend offered me his 8 gb of ram for testing purposes.

I replaced the ram , and i haven't got a issue since. The issue doesn't happen as well while i dont have any memory stick inside . (Laptop has 4gb of memory integrated-built inside)

My question is, which memory should i buy for my laptop since the first 4 gb i bought i have ran through windows memory diagnostics tool and memtest and both showed no errors.
At the sites which show my laptop , it says that 1600mhz ddr3 PC3L would do it , but when i look into my task manager , the ram tab says the integrated memory is running on a 1866 mhz

http://prntscr.com/k4zazz

This is my integrated 4 gb of memory, which i took a pic of today http://prntscr.com/k4zbm3

I don't know what went wrong , but i would not like to destroy my laptop and i would like to buy a compatible memory. If anyone can help me , please do. I would be great-full.
Thank you !

Hello, thank you for your reply!
I have not tried using that ram again cause i am scared to damage my laptop somehow. I am returning that memory today.
Basically, where i am from, i could not find any Crucial memory sticks which would help me. (I am buying a used memory stick just to clarify)
So what you are saying is that the Kingston/Nanya memory i bought should actually be compatible ? If so , maybe the memory was just faulty.
Could you tell me is this memory good ? I am thinking for getting this for only 40 $ (one of these)
http://prntscr.com/k543mj

(BTW you didn't mention any kingston 1866 mhz ram ?)

Thank you again !

Yea, if your friend's RAM stick was working just fine, more than likely it was just a faulty stick.

Those should work since they are one of the recommended 8GB sticks on the Kingston site that I linked.

In the Kingston RAM configurator that I linked, the 1866 MHz RAM are the HyperX line and they cost a bit more. If you can find them at a price you can afford then I recommend getting those instead.

I have figured the site you have sent me is set to USA and links 1866 mhz while when i convert it to EU , it sets the ram memories to 1600 mhz for some reason.
Thank you, i will order a memory stick again and i hope i don't run into a faulty one again.!

You can use the "Where to Buy" button up top to find 1866 MHz RAM in your country if you are still considering higher speed RAM. Either way, good luck :)

I have installed one more program to check for my ram compatibility (AIDA 64 extreme) and it found that my chipset is supporting only memories up to 1600 mhz. Very weird.

That's interesting. I guess you will be fine with 1600 MHz RAM and it will save you some money compared to 1866 MHz ones.
