Just installed my new Kingston SSD, and noticed it isn't as fast as I would have expected, so I ran some tests.

not surprising, DRAM-less SSDs like the A400 are typically slow by SSD standards, especially when it comes to random reads and writes.

There is just the issue, that this guy was able to achieve much higher speeds. QD and block size are the same.

Will this just mean all a a400s are like this. So I should just splash out a bit more on a better ssd?

Ouch.

There seems to be definitly something wrong with it.

Get it replaced with something else. I guess you can still return it. Crucial usually has some quite cheap and well performing SSDs.

Maybe Kingston is bullshitting customers again, by changing out NAND chips or controllers.

Basically, Kingston and PNY were caught red handed in replacing parts in their SSDs with inferior ones to save cost after the inital launch when reviewers do their benchmarks and reviews. It's not only Kingston and PNY that do this in the industry, but they do a bad job of it and the performance hit is great enough to be suspicious.

I know, I had a V300 myself, but one with the original hardware.

Thing is, just because they did it 4 years ago, doesn't mean they necessarily did it with this SSD aswell and so I won't accuse them still of doing this nonsense.

So far I just assume it's a defective SSD and advice to get a different one in case they are still doing the same practice of switching hardware components.

Do you have any suggestions of good SSDs that are 256gb, around the same price point and that are very good. Thanks for all the help as well

There are plenty of pretty good SSDs out there. I don't know the prices at your place, nor do I know where you even live, so I can't make direct suggestions, but usually you will find Crucial MX300, MX500 and certain SanDisk SSDs for relatively cheap. Sometimes even the Samsung 850/860 Evos are on sale.
