I moved to new flat and friend lent me a computer that he no longer uses. (I have only old notebook now)

CPU: i7 920 stock 2,67GHz
cooler: intel stock
Mobo: Intel DX58SO (1366LGA)
RAM: 4x 2GB DDR3 1600
GPU: Nv 590
1920x1080 monitor

This is around 8-10y old PC so temps are not that great - (around 50-60 in idle,up to 80-85 cpu and gpu in games)
Im planning to build a new PC but in like a year from now.
Right now im wondering if upgrade this old rig is even worth. For light gaming its fine as it is but i would like to play something more demanding
and I dont wanna spend too much money right now.
What should i do?

1) "Go full balls on the walls. This rig is immortal and has potantial"
Buy a new cpu on ebay (old old datasheet on the intel site says i can go up to W3690 (6c12threads)), oc ofc. but only air.
Lot of people use X5660 but i suppose if datasheet for mobo doesent mention this cpu i should avoid it.
Buy a decenet gpu for FHD gaming

2) "Dont buy anything its 10years old rig dude your mobo can self-ignite if you try OC"

3) "Something between"
New Air cooler, change thermal paste on CPU and do a bit of OC? Maybe even delid (dont have tool)?
I dont think i can squeeze much more power from the GPU even if i change thermal paste.
So maybe buy a cheap second hand gpu 1060/580 or older gen?

Any other ideas are welcomed
btw Im from central europe, so no cheap newegg things :(
(sry about my english)

That core count wont do anything for you, that cpu has a seriously slow per core speed.

If you really want to play with upgrading find something with less cores and a high clock speed that is unlocked, get yourself a nice cooler and OC it. Get rid of those 2gb dims and get 16gbs of ram 4x4gb dims or 2x8gb since it doesn't support quad channel anyway. try and get an older gen gpu(7-9 series NVidia, 4-5 series radeon)

Ebay is your best friend.

Get a Hyper212 EVO and thermal grizzly kryonaut to replace the stock thermal compound and cooler, get 16gb ram (2x8gb as it doesnt support quad channel). Overclock the CPU to hell, overclock the RAM and configure the timings if you're brave enough, add an SSD and grab a 7 - 9 series nvidia GPU or anything up to an r9 on the amd side. Once you've done that, it'll be fit for gaming once more for another few years.

There are 10 types of people in this world. Those that understand binary and those that don't.

For this mobo i can go only with these cpus https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/boardsandkits/desktop-boards/DX58SO.pdf

Internet says that W3670 should work on any x58 and its around 45$ I might try this one.

If i wont find information that x5660 (25$ which everyone recomending for x58) is working with this mobo i wont push my luck.

Now ill wait for delivery and for good deal with gpu.

I could update this thread if anyone is interseted.

http://www.userbenchmark.com/System/Intel-DX58SO/2640 userbenchmark has picked up dozens of builds with xeons that weren't listed as compatible with that board, so you'll be fine running something like an X5650 if it's cheaper.

  • 1 month later...

Quick update.

I eventually bought w3670, SSD, Hyper212 X (old case doesn't have hole on the back side of motherboard for mounting cooler. Yack), used grizzly kryonaut and salvaged R9 290x ref. edition from another old PC. Now I waiting for RAM modules so no OC yet.

R9 is fine and dandy, but soo noisy - I blame the old case :D

Now I have another dilemma. I have found second hand 1080Ti (blower) for price of 1070Ti founders from Nvidia.

I know, I know. 1080Ti is overkill for 1080p and its poopy "founders like" edition. Not to mention new cards are rolling out. But the temptation..
