So I have decided it’s probably time to upgrade my current build. Right now I have an i5 6600, GTX 960, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, 350GB (around about) HDD. It performs alright for what it is but more modern hardware is far superior and much quieter. I would sell all but the ram stick (to use in the upgrade) plus a few pieces of tech and such I have to fund the new parts.

It’s July 2018, and rumours suggest Intel are releasing cannon lake later this year. I don’t know whether to pull the trigger or wait for 9th gen Intel (or possibly Zen 2) and the also looming Nvidia Volta. I have been looking around and found possible GPUs are the GTX 780Ti (old but still decent and can be found cheap), GTX 980Ti, GTX 1070 and GTX 1070Ti. For CPUs, the 8600k (phenomenal for value), 7700k, 8700k, or even 4790k (when overclocked can be good and may be cheaper). There’s also the 7640X which at £120 is great value but requires a more expensive motherboard (lga 2066). I also wouldn’t rule out Ryzen but being a gamer rather than streamer/content creator, Intel seems better for me. I am very likely to pick a Z series motherboard as I want to overclock the system.

Any suggestions for parts would be appreciated.

Your PC is fine for 1080p gaming.

If you only have a 1080p 60hz display upgrade that first, then buy a new GPU when they launch in a few months, then buy Ryzen 3000 in like 2019

The only good value CPU you have listed there is the i7 8700, but non K, Ryzen is where all the value is at.

The X299 quad core is a joke.

and if you only have 1 stick of RAM just sell it and get a 2800mhz or better dual channel kit with the upgrade.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

the 8600k beats all Ryzen chips at gaming when OCd, at a very competitive price, so its top of my list of CPUs unless someone gives me a good reason for anything else to be above it (Zen 2 is unlikely to beat 9th or 10th Gen Intel in gaming). As for my display, I don't think my current rig could handle 1440p/4K or 120/144hz. And for GPUs, yeah I guess waiting for the Volta series to come out could be my best bet.

The i7 8700 is a better value than the 8600K, cost is about the same given the cheaper motherboard and included cooler if you're going coffee lake. The hyperthreading is likely more useful than a 700mhz advantage overall.

An R5 1600 + B350 Pro4 board costs almost as much as the 8600K on it's own at $209 right now.

Your GTX 960 would do alright in esports games at 1080p 144hz, and AAA games at like medium with shadows turned down/off.

This one's $199 with a VA panel, Most monitor upgrades are going to have free-sync on the cheaper side, so I'd look out more for Navi and the Vega refresh.
