I have two boxes worth of hardware I'd like to merge into one 'better' machine (for my shop/man cave), and use the leftovers to sell as a basic gaming rig.

CPU: Athlon X4 860k VS Athlon FX 6300

GPU: Asus GTX 750 (non TI) 1gb vs MSI HD7770 1gb

Cases, PSUs etc are just about the same, and both machines have 16gb DDR3 with SSD + HDD.

I'm leaning towards the 6300 with the GTX 750, but every time I read reviews I'm nitpicking about one spec that's better than the "obvious" choice.

The 860k is newer, and has slightly better single core performance, but the 6300k has those extra two cores and its motherboard has better OC potential.

The 7770 has better shaders and memory bandwidth, but the 750's FPS seems higher in benchmarked games.

Use case:  Light gaming (900p panel), occasional photo and video editing, browsing (20+ tabs in chrome not uncommon), playing music.

Help me pick.  Pros/cons, what would YOU choose and why?

the 6300 and 750 will be the better choice, the extra cores will help for editing.

I second Mr.Mcpootis

6300 with the 750.

Want to know which mobo to get?

Spoiler

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

@Herman Mcpootis love the name "McPootis" :D

Last time I heard about X4 cpu's was over a decade ago, while the 6300.... (vishera 6core?) Was in a system I built 3 or 4 years ago for a friend.  I guess I have nothing usefull to add here but the first X64 AMD cpu's were DDR2............. wait those were the X2's.  I don't think I have much input but I know the vishera is newer.  Have one sitting here infact.

Audio go Brrrrrr

The Athlon X4 860 is pretty much an A10 Apu with a bad gpu that's been disabled.  It came out in 2014, while the 6300 is a 2012 part.

just because something comes out later doesn't mean it's better. the single core performance is about the same while the 6300 has 2 extra cores to help it out for editing.

Well, turns out the 6300's Mainboard was pre-UEFI.

Didn't feel like re-loading windows and all my crap from scratch.

Ordered a new mobo off ebay for $29.  This one has UEFI and even more overclocking potential with more VRM than the Asus board I had.  Ordered a cheap enermax tower cooler and some PWM splitters while I was at it.

Oh well, put a pin in this for a week.
