Hey all, the other day I was looking into buying a tablet for media consumption etc and all the decent ones were like $200+, after browsing eBay I found SP3s for 300 and up. Found one in good condition that looked like it had lost power during an updating and was no longer booting to Win10, this one was also the right model with an i5, 8gb of ram and the 256gb ssd. I bought it for under 300 and reinstalled Windows and viola it works! Now after using it for a few weeks I have found the ups and the downs. The issues so far are watching Youtub KILLS my CPU, 1440p content uses 50% - 60% and 80% - 90% on 4k content. Now the worst is when the fan goes biserk on 1080p content which is the majority of Youtube that I watch, there are just random times where it ramps up aswell for no real reason. My question is if there is a fix for this or is it just the old 4300u not liking life anymore? Also is it worth trying to open it up and swap out the thermal compound/clean it? I have heard some good things about the SP4s obeing on skylake architecture, would it be worth switching over to a SP4 for better cooling and performance?

The Surface Pro 3 fans are really annoying, what you're experiencing is basically normal for them.

That said, you could try setting a custom fan profile using SpeedFan or something like that.

@Whiskers has a Surface Pro 3(if I recall correctly), maybe he could help you.

That might be a good idea since  it is only Youtube on chrome that kills my CPU. I'll download Speed fan on it and toy around with it. Also is there an alternative to watching youtube? something like on a phone where it is just better optimized than chrome?

You could try a different browser like Firefox.

So I will have to do some testing at home tomorrow on better internet but firefox and edge dont have 4k or 1440p options, I read thatbthat might be due to speed limitations but IDK right now. I will also try and mess with speed fan a bit and see how it takes it

We pay 10.1cent per kWh,

*snip*

You pay about 50% less than I pay. I also imagine that my rate is probably around half of what some people overseas pay.

Running my 24/7 server costs about $20/month in electric... which might sound like a lot... but I spend more than that on coffee beans at the grocery store.

There's no place like ~

Yea I am currently running my gaming rig 24/7 as a plex server and I know that is not the best option but atleast  I could turn it off if I had a dedicated server and also be more confident with it / giput less stress on it
