Hi everyone. My little brother is currently running an fx-6300 on a ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3. He upgraded to a GTX 1060 recently but has noticed that he isn't getting the performance he should. Since in many games the CPU is running at 70-100% it must be because the processor is bottlenecking, even on a 4.2 overclock. So, he is looking at upgrading to a new processor, and I'm trying to help him figure it out. We're trying to keep costs down as much as possible, but it looks like to upgrade to the new 8th gen intel processors he would need new ram and a new motherboard as well. If he were to upgrade to a 4690k or something he would need a new motherboard, but I think could keep his ddr3 ram. However I would probably have to buy a 4690k or something off of ebay, which I'm slightly worried about since it would be a used processor. Is this worth it? Is upgrading to a 4th gen intel processor a bad idea at this point? If it isn't does anyone have any motherboard recommendations for the 4690K? He has a mid tower case, so it fits up to ATX motherboards.

If you are on a slim budget then yes it is worth it.  Honestly, everything from Sandybridge up is an upgrade for you.  Of course if you can afford it, an i5 8400 or r5 2600 would be the best mid range option, but the old 2nd to 7th gen 4core 8 thread CPUs are good value.

What is your budget for this upgrade?

Honestly want to keep it close to 300. Initially we thought all we need was a new mobo and a new processor, but if we go 8th gen we need new ram I think. So that would add at least 80 to the price, only reason I was considering a 4th gen intel processor was to keep using the sam ram

Get a 4790K for a bit more and you will not regret it...

Any board that support overclocking if you want to overclock or you can go with a 4790 non-k and any board you like and not overclock

I thought that the 4690k and 4790k were pretty similar performance wise if all you were doing was gaming.

200$ for a 4790K
100$ for the motherboard

in 2010 yeah,

in 2018 you start to see games using 8 cores +

my 4690K OC'd was bottlenecking my gtx 1070 in a couple games

Well first off, where could I get a 4790k for 200? I don't see any on ebay. Second, what kind of motherboard would you suggest I pair with it?

That's a really good point! Does the ryzen perform similarly or better than 4th gen intel?

I believe it worse in singlethreaded and closer in more modern multithreaded games. It is important to note you are also buying into a more upgradable plattform. At this point in time most games are limited by GPU anyways, but if he needs more CPU power he can get a CPU upgrade 2 years down the road without worrying about Mobo and Ram

So you have actually 3 choices here

1. 4790k / z97 mobo - used

2. r5 1600 / x370 or b350 mobo / 8 gb ddr4 ram - new

3. i5 8400 / b360 mobo / 8 gb ddr4 ram - new

EDIT: I would go for new personally.

all would perform roughly same in games

Honestly the fact that it is new is important, so that's a great point. I worry about buying a 4 gen old cpu, and it's a great point that he can upgrade in the future to a new ryzen without having to swap motherboards or ram. I'm seriously considering going that route over a used 4690k or 4790k.

Last gen Ryzen AM4 will be in 2020 with 4000 Ryzen. Which is something i feel for obligated to point out. Singlethreaded is expected to be better by them with 7nm Ryzen

Buy a used 4690K or 2500K, that'll be the best option and it'll deliver respectable 1080p gaming performance

Current gen and last gen Ryzen uses the AM4 socket. This will continue untill 4th gen Ryzen. This means that 300 series motherboards can facilitate a 4th gen Ryzen CPU.

To put it simply. They are keeping the socket for 4 years total and all CPUs comin out within those 4 years will fit in that socket. We are currently 2 years into the AM4 socket lifespan

Man im terrible at explaining things. Someone take over

Oh okay. Gotcha, no I totally get that. That makes sense. Question though, I picked the cheapest components on pcpartpicker with an intel version. Does this looks comparable? If so which do you think I should go with this, or the ryzen? https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Frh6r6

Id run with Ryzen. Though cant say im unbiased

You should be running with a B360 mobo on the 8400 and a 2666/2800mhz Ram on the 8400 aswell

You will be paying a bit over with Intel build sadly. Which i why i build an AMD build. The PRO4 X370 boards are a steal atm aswell as last gen Ryzen

Yeah, fair enough! I'll look into this, as ultimately, the idea is to get the best performing build for the money, and something that will not bottleneck the 1060 like the fx-6300 is currently doing.

Then you should go for option #3

It's by far the best but I didn't verify prices... ? Is it ?
