Laptop OR Desktop?

I play games at high settings and do a lot of editing and rendering task. What shall I buy? Ryzen 1600/1050ti desktop OR Lenovo Legion Y520 laptop (i5 7300HQ 1050ti). I want to get the best performance possible.

The Ryzen desktop will run a LOT faster as its desktop hardware and more spaced out. You can also upgrade ram and storage easier, over time, and generally cheaper. The Ryzen multicore will also help in editing and rendering.

The desktop would get you better performance:

  • It wouldn't throttle because of thermals as easily
  • The Ryzen has a higher base-clock (3.2 vs 2.5) and higher base-boost (3.6 vs 3.5)
  • The Ryzen 1600 has more cores (6 vs 4) and also three times the threads

Desktop will crush that laptop but the laptop is good enough for 1080p high gaming. In your case I would take the laptop because of portability but who knows what you need it for.

If mobility (gaming on the go) is not your priority, then you should definitely go for the desktop option... especially when you want the best performance possible.

About thre CPU: for $ 200 you can get either a i5 8400, or the ryzen 1600. The Ryzen is actually not the best gaming CPU. Gaming is still highly dependent on single threaded performance, which the Intel i5 8400 is faster in. This is because the coffee lake architecture has higher IPC (instructions per clock) which will provide more performance in games.

The 1600 is hyper threaded though, whereas the i5 isn’t. This gives it higher multi core performance, which makes it a better choice if you will be streaming or also doing productivity oriented workloads. Additionally, the Ryzen architecture has a lot more infrastructure in place. There aren’t any B series (affordable) motherboards for coffee lake, so the overall system cost is higher. Overall, in your situation I would get the Ryzen though.

About the GPU: depending on your graphical needs (the games you will be playing at the resolution, refresh rate and settings you like), a 1050 Ti will probably not cut it. As others have mentioned, I would suggest upgrading to a 1060 6 GB (not the 3 GB version) for general gaming.

Desktop all the way.

Ryzen 5. Get a used 970 or used 1060 6GB. 1050Ti isn't worth it IMO.

1050ti (or the new 1050 3gb) are ok only for small form factor/low power PCs. If power/space is not a worry, go up to second hand 970/1060 (but avoid the bad 1060 Nvidia released!).

If you do rendering, go Desktop. As said, the only reason for small form factor, or Laptop is if you need to move it, or if you need low power/space. But even then, if you are clever you can do small form factor (if at Uni) and a cheap laptop for coursework. A render station should not be something you take into class. xD

CPU or GPU rendering?

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
