So today I updated my bios to latest because of a freezing problem. It all went fine, until I realised I had to re activate windows 7. So I re-entered my code but it was invalid, I tried twice.

The system is a self built PC- it has a 3570k, gigabyte z773dh motherboard, and a gtx 660. The copy of windows is the OEM version.

Thing is I have reinstalled windows twice before using the same product key and all has been fine. I don't want to have to buy a new copy (though if I do I might give windows 8 a try.) I REALLY don't want to download all of my stuff like games and applications etc again because my internet is slow, and I'm not kidding it will probably take a week in sheer download time. For example it took me 21 hours to download Crysis 1, and that's only one game.

I'd rather not call Microsoft, but I will if I have to.

Thanks people.

Ah don't worry. Basically, because you updated the BIOS, it changed a identification number that Windows 7 activation was using to identify your motherboard. Therefor it raised a red flag to Microsoft activation server, as it believes that you used that product key on another computer.

The only way to solve this, is to click on the phone activation process. It's quick and easy.

Basically, the activation window will generate a key. When you call on the provided number (usually toll free number), you will be talking to a machine who will ask you to say (or you can enter from your phone) the numbers that you see on your screen. Then it will ask you, is Windows installed on another computer? Which you answer no (if you answer yes, it will transfer you to Windows sales rep, who will inform you that your license doesn't allow you to do this, and will help you to find the best edition of Windows that fits your needs).

Once you answer no, you'll be given an overwrite activation code. You just enter in the activation box, and voila you are done!

It won't pass 5min this phone call.

Personally, I suggest for you to ensure that your system is operating properly, and then activate Windows. If you think of doing another BIOS update, do it before.

Thanks GoodBytes, I will do that and let you know how it goes. I think the bios update has fixed my problem but I will try and make sure before I re-activate it. Thanks again.

Edit: Just did it and it went smoothly, my windows is now genuine, thanks a alot Goodbytes :)
