Hello, I want to build a PC for around 500$ and I am mostly going to be using it for video editing and things like that, not so much gaming, and I'm not great at putting together a parts list so I could use all the help I can get. Also would an R9 270 be fine for this build? My friend has one that he would sell to me for cheap. Thanks

Are you actually in a country that uses dollars, or will you be ordering from one? If not, tell us your actual country and currency. Having a build in a currency you're not building in can be completely useless. Also, you put dollars...there are almost a dozen, if not more countries that use that currency. Is it USD? CAD? NZD, SGD, HKD, AUD, etc etc..

How much is the friend asking for the video card? Is your video work GPU or CPU intensive?

I am in the US and im buying everything in dollars. My friend is saying he will give me the R9 270 for $40 or $50. I was thinking about getting an i5 and upgrading my GPU later down the line if/when it needs replacing.

Hey there. The R9 270 is decent. It would suffice to what you are going to use it for. Unless CUDA acceleration is important to you. I've made a draft build for you below.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel - Core i5-8400 2.8GHz 6-Core Processor  ($178.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: MSI - B360M PRO-VD Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($55.99 @ B&H)
Memory: Team - Vulcan 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory  ($139.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Inland - Professional 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($24.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Seagate - Constellation ES 3TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($64.99 @ Amazon)
Case: Cougar - MX330 ATX Mid Tower Case  ($24.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Power Supply: Corsair - CXM (2015) 450W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($26.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $516.93

Rationale:

CPU: i5-8400 - A decent CPU for video editing. Very stable as well. (less crashes and blue screen)

Motherboard: Basic motherboard. Cheaply made, but will do the job just fine.

RAM: 16gb is needed nowadays. So yeah.

SSD: Cheap-o SSD. Just enough to install  your OS and most used apps such as your browser.

HDD: 3TB for your large files.

Case: Just your average case. Decent for its price.

PSU: Barely passable quality PSU. The best one you can get for this price. Semi-modular as well for easier cable management
